The GTO was one of the cars hit by the awful new trends in the American automotive space and which pushed customers away from powerful engines. Insurance costs were ridiculous, so not even diehard Pontiac fans agreed to pay more just to drive a GTO.

The goat struggled, with only 72,287 units shipped this year. The hardtop remained everybody's favorite, accounting for 58K units, while the convertible was ordered by only 7,328 customers.

The Ram Air III was fitted with a 400ci engine developing 366 horsepower. It sported a cold air intake, and drivers could open it manually. The hardtop also dominated Ram Air III orders, and most customers picked a manual gearbox. However, only 1,986 buyers configured their GTO Ram Air III With an automatic transmission.

One of these goats is here, allegedly after spending a long time in storage.

The photos could easily make even the most experienced restorers to walk away, as this GTO is a huge project. It requires work in all areas, with the metal struggling with massive rust problems. I won't insist much on its condition because the owner thoroughly described it – I recommend that all buyers check out all details in the eBay listing – but you should assume that this GTO needs almost everything.

The seller admits this is a huge project that only a skilled restorer can start, revealing that several parts are also missing. For example, the Rally II wheels, the AM/FM stereo, and the floor mats are no longer in the car, likely as they were donated to another project.

The floors, the trunk, and many other metal parts have already been invaded by rust and are now in horrible shape. The frame is still "decent," but you should check it out in person if you're ready to give this car a second chance. Unfortunately, the engine and the transmission are also long gone, and considering the powertrain was one of the top selling points, this significantly lowers the value of the car.

However, the owner still optimistic about this GTO, claiming it can be used by a professional restoration guy to turn it into a rare GTO. Indeed, the low production numbers make it extremely desirable, but its condition really doesn’t, especially considering the missing parts.

eBay seller lilunski69 believes $7,500 is a fair price, and given the auction comes without a reserve, this is the lowest offer you can make to secure the car. The bidding is in its early days, so it'll be interesting to see how high the battle goes.

The car is parked in Conway, South Carolina, and you will need a trailer to tow it home, considering its shape. The listing will expire in six days, so you have enough time to contact the seller and arrange an in-person inspection.
