This particular example of the ultimate 993 - chassis #393094 - was produced by Porsche’s Weissach Competition department in July 1995, and, though fully race-spec, and was commissioned by a Japanese enthusiast for legal use on the road (official paperwork confirms it is one of the very few remaining road-going examples left running, though North American bidders may need to do some homework).
30-Year-Old Porsche Still Packs A Mean Punch By Modern Standards
Ordered in race-spec, this GT2 R features the model’s customary flared wheel arches and massive rear spoiler, as well as a 100-liter racing fuel tank, "racing safety devices," and a completely stripped-out cabin. The left-hand drive model also features its original, air-cooled, 450-horsepower 3.6-liter turbocharged flat-six, complete with bespoke TAG ECU module (a rarity, as later models were equipped with a restrictive Bosch example) that was fully-refurbished by the McLaren Group in 2024.
Originally delivered to Nagoya, Japan in 1996 (where it was used by its original owner as a pseudo daily-driver as well as select track days), chassis #393094 was eventually exported to the UK in 2017. Five years later, and under the tutelage of RS/RSR specialist Neil Bainbridge/BS Motorsports, the flat-six was completely overhauled to the tune of £63,589.09 (around $85,300). Save some minor touch-ups and light scrapes, that Grand Prix White paint is original, too.
Le Mans Class-Winning Pedigree
Unsurprisingly, when the Type 993 replaced the 964 for 1994, it wasn’t long before a stripped-down, welterweight example of the 993, the GT2 RS, arrived, complete with Carrera RS/RSR-inspired riveted widebody flares, deep chin spoiler, and a looming rear spoiler. With that, Porsche had the basis for its new, race-spec GT2 R, which would go on to demolish its category rivals in both the BPR Endurance Series (essentially the World Sports Car Championship) and at Le Mans in 1996.
Clearly, this is a special car for Porsche-philes, and that comes with a lofty price. This example is expected to fetch at least $800,000 to $1 million when it goes under the hammer with Bonhams in Miami on 3 May.
