As a brief note, the first-gen model often goes by the moniker Urquattro, where "Ur" is a German prefix meaning original. This isn't just a nickname, either; Audi uses the title on its site selling parts for classic models.
Now, a builder is aiming to create a wild, widebody Urquattro restomod. The plan is to combine a 1986 Quattro body with the underpinnings from the 2006-2008 RS4. Plus, power is supposed to come from a supercharged 4.2-liter V8. The creator is chronicling the build process on social media.
A Thoroughly Modern Audi Quattro
So far, the finished vehicle only exists as a rendering. Check out the first photo in the gallery above to see how it should look when the project is done. The builder intends to craft the widened fenders out of metal, which is unusual because materials such as fiberglass, carbon fiber, or even plastic are easier to form into complex shapes.
The completed Quattro restomod should feature a prominent front splitter and huge openings ahead of the front wheels. There are similarly prominent inlets at the back. Chunky side sills connect the two sections. The car rides on a set of massive turbofan-style wheels.
The builder launched the social media accounts for the project in March 2025, and the work has been coming along gradually. He started with a white Urquattro donor car and later acquired the RS4, complete with its V8 engine. Since then, he has been stripping components from both of them. Nothing more than the bare metal chassis are left at this point. In addition, the front suspension is already complete, including the slotted brake rotors.
A chassis jig and laser measuring equipment allowed the builder to adjust the base of the A and B pillars so that they align with the new floor plan. It's a sophisticated setup, indicating this project goes far beyond someone playing Dr. Frankenstein in the garage. We look forward to seeing this build once everything is done.
The Audi Quattro Is Becoming A Classic
As the Urquattro ages, there's growing interest in modernizing these classic coupes. For example, the famed tuner Abt Sportsline showed off a restomod version using a turbocharged 2.5-liter five-cylinder, reportedly making around 530 horsepower. The revised body included wider fenders, a Sport Quattro-style grille, and a prominent rear wing.
Another builder created one with a twin-turbocharged 2.7-liter V6, including an RS4-spec intake, turbos, and injectors. Custom intercoolers and engine management system made the most of the components. It also had a Torsen center differential and a limited-slip rear differential.
Meanwhile, the company LCE Performance has already built several Quattro restomods, including one for the late Ken Block. Its creations produce as much as 750 hp. The company uses the 2.5-liter inline-five from an Audi turbodiesel engine and adds components, such as an Audi S2 20-valve cylinder head and an upgraded turbo.
