You Won't Believe How Much Someone Paid For An Acura Integra Type R
The classic car market has pivoted over the past decade or so. Boomers and the muscle cars of their youth once dominated the scene. But newly affluent and nostalgic Gen X and older millennial buyers have shifted the money and interest to the vehicles of their youth: 1980s and 1990s sports cars.

One of the most revered members of that group is the Acura Integra Type R. One of them, a nearly mint 2001 model with only 4,800 miles, just achieved a bonkers price on Bring a Trailer.Someone Paid More Than $204,000 For An Integra Type R

The auction for that minty 2001 Acura Integra Type R escalated quickly. A bidding war in the final 20 minutes of the auction added more than $100,000 to the final price. The car gaveled for an incredible $204,204. It shattered the previous record for an Integra Type R on Bring a Trailer, where a 7,000-mile 2000 model fetched $112,112 in January 2022. No other Integra Type R has sold for more than $90,000 on the site.

For perspective, this 2001 Acura Integra Type R retailed for $24,450 when new, which is approximately $44,380 in today’s dollars according to an inflation calculator. The typical price for an Acura Integra Type R is more affordable than one might expect, in the $25,000-$35,000 range – about the same price as a new Honda Civic Si. The winner paid $96 less than the starting MSRP of a Porsche 911 Turbo.

Why The Acura Integra Type R Is Special

As with the modern Honda Civic Type R, the “R” stands for racing. And the Acura Integra Type R, sold between 1997 and 2001, is a street-legal racing version of the third-generation Acura Integra. Its 1.8-liter VTEC inline-four put out 195 horsepower, 55 hp more than the base trim Integras. It had an 8,400 rpm redline, a dramatically more rigid chassis, and weight reduction from the base model.

The Acura Integra Type R offers a relatively purist experience compared to modern sports cars, featuring high-revving, naturally aspirated power and a five-speed manual transmission. And the Integra Type R is often highlighted as one of the best-handling front-wheel-drive cars of all time.

The Integra Type R is also relatively rare. Total production for the U.S. market was fewer than 4,000 vehicles during its model run. And not all of those were treated as precious heirlooms. This Integra was number 1,086 of just 1,173 sold for the 2001 model year, making it likely the newest and least driven Integra Type R that will ever come to market.

Don’t Read Too Much Into This Acura Integra Type R Auction
The market for Acura Integra Type Rs has inflated; this author remembers covering an $80,000-plus auction for an Integra Type R as gobsmacking news just a few years ago. But all a Bring a Trailer auction needs to blow up is two well-heeled enthusiasts with some cash to burn. And while notable, this jaw-dropping record price probably will not set a new paradigm for Integra Type R prices moving forward.
