Seller's comments about 1955' Bristol 404

1955 Bristol 404
Registration: PUK 990
Date Of First Registration: 25th March 1955
Chassis Number: 404/ 2048
1 of only 51 examples ever produced by Bristol Cars, the Bristol 404 deemed ‘the businessman’s express’ upon it’s unveil in 1953 was a statement from Bristol Cars who up until 1953 were known for their fast 4-seat saloon cars. The 404 Coupe weighing in just under 1 ton and producing a significant amount of power from either the 100B (105BHP) or 100C (125BPH) Bristol 6 cylinder took the top speed to 119MPH, most impressive for a 2L engine at the time. Another first for Bristol that featured in the 404 is the wing bays which housed the spare wheel and electronics, this would be used for the next 50 years of Bristol’s across all models.
404/ 2048 was originally dispatched on the 25th of March 1955 to the well-known distributor George Newman & Co of Brighton who supplied the car to its first owner Professor P Krohn. Over the years 404/ 2048’s history has been incredibly looked after with present documents from new. Despite no major racing documented, we do know that in 1956 the car took part in the Round Britian Rally and various other rally’s over the years.
Fitted with the original 100B/ 3605 engine and gearbox, however, the original brakes have been upgraded with the front drum brakes being replaced by disc brakes with servo assistance which brings the car to a stop incredibly well. The car also now features overdrive which was an upgrade often fitted to 404’s following the release of the 405 in 1954 that featured overdrive from standard.
In 2016 404/ 2048 found it’s was back into the ownership of Bristol Cars until 2017 when the current owner purchased the car from them.
During the last 8 years the 404 travels yearly from Yorkshire to well-known marque specialist in Wiltshire, Charlie Russell for service work anything else which is required.
404/ 2048 certainly has the rarity factor and is extremely wonderful to drive.
