Seller's comments about 1965' Jaguar E-Type

This lot will be auctioned via Iconic Auctioneers, The Iconic Sale at the BRDC Classic 2026 - Collectors' Cars on Saturday the 25th of July, The Wing, Silverstone Circuit, NN12 8TN. The Jaguar E-Type Series I 4. 2 Roadster remains one of the most recognisable and celebrated sports cars of the 20th century, combining advanced engineering with Malcolm Sayer’s timeless design. Introduced in 1961 and developed from Jaguar’s Le Mans-winning D-Type, the E-Type set new standards for performance and value, with its monocoque construction, independent suspension and 150mph capability placing it firmly at the forefront of contemporary sports car design.By late 1964, the introduction of the 4. 2-litre engine marked a significant step forward. Whilst visually almost unchanged, the revised model benefitted from increased torque and improved flexibility, complemented by a fully synchromesh gearbox and enhanced braking. For many enthusiasts, the Series I 4. 2 represents the most desirable evolution, combining the purity of the original design with more user-friendly mechanicals. This particular right-hand drive Roadster, chassis number 1E1298, is understood to be the 298th 4. 2-litre example produced and was supplied new in the Republic of Ireland. Finished from the factory in Opalescent Silver Blue with a dark blue interior and matching hood, the car was distributed via Frank Cavey in Dublin and subsequently sold through Murphy & Gunn, who are believed to have initially registered the car as a demonstrator. Pleasingly, the supplying dealer’s period rear window sticker remains in place.Remarkably, the E-Type remained with its original owner for the majority of its life before being acquired by our vendor, only its second owner, in 2017. Since then, it has formed part of a carefully curated private Collection and has been maintained with a clear emphasis on preservation and usability. During current ownership, the car has been fully resprayed in January 2021 by Grange Moor Coachworks of Wakefield, presenting today in a finish that complements its original colour scheme. Importantly, all body panels are understood to be original, supporting the car’s integrity and appeal.Further improvements include the fitment of a new convertible hood supplied by BAS International, along with a tonneau cover, ensuring the car remains well suited to open-top touring. Mechanical maintenance has been carried out by the collection’s in-house mechanic, with the car reportedly kept in good running order throughout its time with the current owner.Having covered circa 54, 000 miles from new, this example presents as an honest and well-cared-for E-Type, benefitting from long-term ownership and considered upkeep rather than extensive modification. Its history is supported by a Jaguar Heritage Trust certificate, owner’s handbook, lubrication chart and original Republic of Ireland buff registration book, supporting its provenance and early life plus confirming its build details and original specification.Offered as a ready-to-enjoy example of one of Jaguar’s most iconic models, this Series I 4. 2 Roadster combines desirable specification, low ownership and careful stewardship, making it a compelling proposition for collectors and enthusiasts alike.
