A classic car suffers from incontinence, takes time to start, smells bad and is tiring. Right? Wrong. In the case of the Mercedes-Benz 220 SE it is doubly wrong, because thanks to a list of innovations never seen before at the time, the W111 is today as easy and pleasant to drive as any modern car.
In fact, the W111 was so innovative that it remained in production for 12 years. Between 1959 and 1971, almost 400 thousand units were sold, which alone helps to confirm the success and quality of this ‘star’.
Mechanical injection ensures that the engine wakes up at the first turn of the ignition and that its operation is always smooth and predictable. This 220 SE is not a high-speed car, despite that, thanks to the 2200cc in-line six-cylinder block, with a very round torque curve, it overtakes and gains speed without much effort.
The power steering and the 4-speed manual gearbox itself are very pleasant to use, but never in a sporting context, especially because the comfortable seats do not offer any lateral support. This is a car to drive sparingly. Top down, Smooth FM on the radio and good company at your side.
This 220 SE was sold new in France in January 1963 and has undergone a comprehensive, fully documented restoration.
