At a time when Mercedes-Benz cars were still handcrafted, with a meticulous attention to detail, resulting in an unparalleled build quality, the very elegant Coupé and Cabriolet bodies were born in 1961 from the W111 platform.
Imagined by Paul Bracq, its slender and long silhouette is nowadays considered timeless and one of the most beautiful of the brand, and it was with this model that the end of the iconic “heckflosse” design (or as it is affectionately known here, tail) was marked. of fish).
At the time, this chassis, together with the most advanced mechanics, formed the top of the range of Mercedes-Benz. It was the most technologically advanced platform that the manufacturer offered and in this two-door configuration, it was a true high-performance luxury car, finding its match only in models such as the Corniche or Continental Mulliner Park Ward, from the manufacturers Rolls-Royce and Bentley. respectively. It is without a doubt one of the most sought after and most interesting models of this German brand.
The example we have here, configured in Beige Gray 725 on dark brown leather 8010, tells a very interesting story. It met its first owner in the United States in 1968 (where a large number of these units were exported), with whom it stayed during the first years of its existence. It was then acquired by a Portuguese family residing in Florida, USA, with whom it remained for practically all its life.
In 1990 they decided to return to Portugal and the esteem for the 280 SE was such that they did not let it be left behind. Although it has never been meticulously restored, it is a car that has been extremely well maintained and cherished over the years and as such is in very good condition and retains an impressive level of originality.
Of all the optional equipment that the factory provided, this example contains practically all the items, namely: Automatic box with “floor shift”, 4 electric windows, electric sunroof, Blaupunkt telephony, air conditioning, power steering, among others. We also emphasize that the engine and gearbox are original (matching numbers).
The last repairs and maintenance have already been carried out with the testimony in our possession, where we highlight the last intervention carried out by the Mercedes-Benz Classic Center to seal leaks and make various adjustments, whose invoice (which we provide) totaled more than €8500.
