Initially wearing the Morris badge, design number 'ADO16' was hot from the drawing boards of Alec Issigonis and Pininfarina. The ADO16 was fitted with a transverse A-series engine that power delivered through the front wheels like the earlier Mini, but was a larger car overall that was offered only as a four-door from the outset, and would become the basis for most modern family cars today. Thanks to BMC badge-engineering, the ADO16 was offered in many guises as a Morris, Austin, Wolseley, Vanden Plas, MG and Riley which made it truly universal in its appeal. Initially dubbed the '1100' as the MkI was offered only with the 1098cc A-series, in 1967 the MkII was announced which included a slight re-style, with the 'posh' or sporting models upgraded with the larger and more up-to-date 1275cc engine.
