Here’s a rare opportunity to buy a stunning, very rare, “ASHLEY” bodied MG Midget for very affordable money. Subject to a long term nut & bolt rebuild the car is like brand new on the underside and has many expensive mechanical upgrades including the Ford 5 speed gearbox conversion.
Just arrived with us from long term inactivity it needs lite recommissioning and we currently do not have the time or space so its being offered up as an easy winter project for one lucky buyer, turns over, brakes work, clutch is free, all electric lights, indicators, horn wipers, dash clocks work and it will cough but not start, see our Youtube video, most likely stale fuel, sticky twin carbs or a combination of the two, it will be removed from sale once we get a space in the workshop, so don’t leave it sitting or it will be gone, get in touch.
It has literally had thousands spent on it over the years, a long term hill climb project that never saw fruition, as mentioned, we are told it has a Ford 5 speed gearbox conversion (it’s definitely a Ford box, see underside pics) delivering power via a 9” drive to the inline mounted 1275GT engine which has been fitted with a fast road cam, lightened tappets, an oil cooler and pancake air intakes. Front brakes are upgraded with what we are told to be Kelvar brake pads, braided hoses & new discs. Rear axle has new Monroe suspension, all new brakes & pipes, there is a working high pressure fuel pump in the boot again fitted on braided hoses. Brand new exhaust front to back and a set of matching brand new tyres.
The car is completely solid front to back, the floor pans and cills are rock solid as is the rear spring mounts and boot floor, no rot or degrading of any kind on the whole chassis / floorplan, you simply will not find a better one, see pics and video. The fluids are all correct, clean and contamination free, strong antifreeze mixture in clear coolant, see pics.
First registered in 1980 the current logbook shows the correct engine size of 1275 and its tax and Mot exempt, mileage is showing 80581 unconfirmed, current owner since 2011 (it’s not been passed around in the last 14 years) and it comes with small history file with a mixed assortment of invoices, manuals, handbooks and restoration information, there is also the instruction manual for the 5 speed gearbox conversion.
Inside is very well finished, new bucket seats, new carpets, new door cards, all matching nicely, unmolested dashboard with no additions and the gearbox tunnel conversion is so good it looks original, a really smart interior all round, both doors click shut without slamming, the windows wind down the locks work, the car produces enough oil pressure to send the dash gauge over 90psi whilst just cranking the engine, again please see the video.
The ”Ashley” body conversion has been well executed with a race style flip up front end and a well fitted hardtop conversion, the look of these rare little cars is amazing, they are like a pocket sized Aston Martin. Not been over egged, original Rostyle wheels, no silly flared arches, it just has a few nice little touches like the rear bumperettes and the Monza style fuel cap. Paint finish overall is presentable but not show standard, imperfections will be found on close inspection, it was being prepared to race, not show.
We have tried our best to show what’s on offer and believe it an excellent value high spec sports car with huge potential, a few points, it’s not been run whilst with us so engine & box obviously untried, brakes tested at low speed on steep loading ramps and clutch static tested (in gear won’t push, dip clutch will push).
Don’t miss the chance on offer here, yes it’s a bit of a gamble but its worth what we are asking in parts alone, you’d get 4 grand for the body tub, a floppy top heritage shell is currently £14k without panels and you simply will not find a better demonstrated project car showing you everything as we have for sale anywhere else.
