There is something special about a 1972 Porsche 911. For the first time, the entire U.S. model year lineup all had the famous mechanical fuel injection and the one-year-only side oil door (for better weight balance). Only the North America T’s got MFI for 1972 and 1973, while the rest of the world (ROW) still got the Zenith carbs. Furthermore, the ‘72s still retained the smaller bumperettes unlike the unsightly impact bumpers that were mandated for U.S. ’73 models. It was also the first year displacement bumped to 2.4 liters. As the market continues to grow for “long-hood” 911s, the 1972 model is quickly becoming one of the most desirable.

This Porsche 911 was built in December of 1971. Pray Porsche of Greenwich, Connecticut sold it new on April 14th, 1972 to a Mr. John Rosenthal. It was ordered with the following factory options:

US Equipment
Blaupunkt Radio “Frankfurt” (US Band)
Comfort Equipment :
-Velour carpeting
-Aluminium door sills
-911S rubber mouldings on bumpers and below doors
-911S instruments
-Rubber bumperettes (fronts removed by owner for cleaner look)
-Leather covered steering wheel
-Aluminum rocker panels
Pressure Cast Wheels (5.5Jx15)
Pirelli Tires

Over the years, the wheels were upgraded to factory Fuchs (6Jx15) and houndstooth inserts on the seats (original was courderoy).

Mr. Rosenthal drove the car regularly and serviced it at his local Porsche dealership (with correct corresponding stamps in the service booklet). At the end of 1975, Mr. Rosenthal had put on about 53k-miles. He took the car to the dealer and had it completely inspected for rust (notes in records). They found it to be dry and clean so he decided to have the car completely rust-proofed with Ziebart to further protect it.

Per the owner’s words in the service booklet (see pic), “Beginning in fall of 1978, car is used seldom and oil + filter are changed every fall before storing” – note dated May of 1991. By 1978, the car had about 57,000 original miles and the shocks had just been replaced with Konis.

By 2008, this survivor 911 only had around 71,000 original miles. It has been used sparingly during the good months, serviced, and stored during the winter. The family decided to give the car some extra mechanical attention beyond the normal service. For the next 2-years, they invested over $20,000 bringing their Porsche to the next level. A well-respected local air-cooled Porsche specialists did all the work. Highlights of the repairs included:

Complete disassembly of engine
Prep and powdercoat tin/metal parts
Measured, cleaned, and honed cylinder jugs
Clean all MFI linkage/relubed necessary components
New clutch kit
Resurfaced flywheel
New oil return tubes
New piston ring set
Carrera tensioner update kit
New timing chains and guides
New head studs
Replaced all seals
Replaced oil cooler
Rebuilt alternator
New shifter coupling
Refinished heads
3-angle valve job
Porsche spark plug wires and Bosch plugs
New front and rear Koni Classic shocks
Front brake lines
New Master cylinder
Rebuilt brake calipers/flushed system
Install new rubber seals in doors, hood, and deck lid
Rebuild original Blaupunkt radio
New heat/vent controls and cables

After the rebuild, the car was run on the dyno and the results were nearly exact factory specification: 140hp and 150 torque (10 more than stock).

The family sold the car a little over a year ago with about 75k-miles on the clock. It ended up with a local Orange County Porsche enthusiast/collector. This owner had been looking for that perfect long-hood early 911 for over 4-years. He loved the fact that this car had a 1-ownership history with a lot of originality. Upon purchase, he had a local Porsche specialist do a complete pre-purchase inspection and found it in very good condition. A compression test was performed and the results were excellent at 140 lbs. even across all the cylinders.

For the last 14-months, he has only driven it about 800-miles. During that time he had one of the best MFI air-cooled Porsche specialists in the country perform a service and go through the car. He spent about $2,000 just making sure all the fittings and hardware in the engine bay were factory correct and the MFI pump was tuned properly.

The owner was then fortunate to have a full spread feature on the car in the Early 911 S Registry magazine called Esses (copies of the magazine are included with the car – see pics)

Upon receiving the car to sell on consignment for the owner, we had our local Porsche mechanic look the car over and he confirmed the positive results of the prior year’s inspection. A fresh oil service was performed as well. There was just a slight amount of oil weeping from the rear main seal and right side chain housing. They were minimal and normal for a car that hasn’t been driven regularly. With more regular use, they may even further seal up.

The car is in excellent condition with lots of originality. The exterior looks great and benefits from a high quality, glass-out, bare-metal repaint about 10+ years ago. No filler or metal work is apparent as the paint meter reads extremely low. It appears that the repaint in the original color was due to the typical clear coat issues Porsche had at that time. All the original paint in the doorjambs, trunk, and engine compartment were preserved and verified with a paint meter. There are minimal signs of use…just a few normal chips on the front from driving. All the glass is original including the windscreen (a few areas of delamination are evident – see pics). All the brightwork and deco trim appear to also be original and in excellent condition. H4 European headlamps were fitted many years ago. The correct Fuchs have been refinished over the years and recently wrapped in a fresh set of Vredestein tires in the correct OEM size. The brakes have well over 75% life remaining. The underside reveals excellent original floors and pans with no signs of repairs or abuse. The original factory coatings are still evident and look very good.

The interior is equally as nice and mostly original. The seats have been recently restored and covered in new leatherette with houndstooth inserts. The headliner and visors are in excellent condition. The door panels are very nice with minimal warping on the rear pockets. The dash is original and has two cracks (see pics). However, there is no warping and the original speaker cover fits perfectly. The carpet appears to be original and indicative of a low-mile 911. All the gauges and lights function properly. The clock works as well; so does the original radio.

The record keeping for this 911 is exceptional. Nearly all service receipts are present including early dealer stamps in the original maintenance booklet. Even an original signed letter by Ferry Porsche is preserved and included (see pic).

There is nothing like driving an original low-mile early Porsche 911. There is something you just can’t duplicate on high mile restored cars. It feels extremely tight and responsive. The car starts easily with no hesitation or excessive smoking. The throttle response is sharp and quick. Braking, shifting, and turn-in are all crisp with no issues. This example would be wonderful for any vintage touring event or local shows.

California registration paid through November 2017.

This Porsche comes with the original tool kit, spare, jack, Porsche COA, original owners manuals, original maintenance books, many records, extra key, and several copies of the Esses magazine article.
