Seller's comments about 1924' Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost

Classic Car Auction Gstaad 29 December 2024.
The “best car in the world” was a term used by the British automotive press for the Rolls-Royce 40/ 50 HP presented in 1906, universally known these days as Silver Ghost. The much-advanced cars, built to highest quality standards, were popular with the American social elite well, and growing sales numbers justified the building of an additional factory in Springfield MA in 1921, where chassis for the US market were produced. From 1925 these cars had a three-speed gearbox compared to the English version with four speeds used initially. Our example is a classic Springfield version and was ordered at E. L. Butler in Hollywood in 1924 for none other than legendary US billionaire, entrepreneur, film producer, director and aviation pioneer Howard Hughes. The Piccadilly Roadster, with a Rolls-Royce custom coachwork by Merrimac coachwork company from Springfield, then cost the astronomical $14’477. 50 and Howard Hughes traded in his brand new Duesenberg phaeton for which he got a mere $5’977. 50. In the beginning of 1925, the Silver Ghost was registered for the first time but gifted only a few months later to the silent movie star Jean Harlow. Then the history of the car gets lost in the mist for around 3 decades. From 1959 to 1978 the roadster was owned by the then Rolls Royce Owners Club USA president Ted Reich before being taken over by the Silver Ghost enthusiast and expert B. Paul Moser from Santa Barbara. Under his direction the mechanics, especially the 7. 4 litre engine, were overhauled and the car was repainted in its original colours. In 1986 the Rolls Royce was imported into Switzerland by the then secretary of the Rolls-Royce Enthusiasts Club Switzerland and taken over by the vendors family in the same year. To prevent damage from inactivity, the Rolls Royce was driven annually and was regularly maintained. We are proud to offer an exceedingly rare Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost with a known and exciting history in good to very good condition, completely to original specifications. The last Veteran MOT was completed in August 2023 allowing the car to be registered in most cantons immediately.
