1931 Buick 8-80 2-door coupe
Reg. no. 770 YUM
Chassis no. 2518985
Engine no. 2658518
Buick was positioned as the second-highest marque in the large General Motors range of the early 1930s, only behind Cadillac. For 1931, following a trend that had been spreading through the American motor industry, Buick replaced its straight-6 engines with a new straight-8, with displacements ranging from 3.6 to 5.6 litres. These were fitted to a wide array of cars on four different wheelbases – the 80 being the second-longest at 124 inches. In total, 28 different Buicks were available, and production of the new models totalled 88,000 for the year. The engines were to last until 1953, usually coupled to a 3-speed manual gearbox such as the one found in this car.
This particular car, imported from its homeland in 2011, is a two door coupe from the first year of the straight-8 era. The 5.6 litre engine, producing 104 bhp, has been rebuilt with new valves and rods, and the head skimmed. The radiator has been rebuilt aswell, and reconditioned hydraulic shock absorbers have been fitted. Originally using 6-volt electrics, it has nw been converted to 12-volts, presumably providing some welcome increased vigour when starting. However, the paint and interior have not been renewed and are described by the vendor as poor, although the body is solid and the chassis good, the car passing its most recent MOTs in 2012 and 2013 with no advisories. Off the road for the last three years, this car should be a relatively straightforward project. It is offered here with a V5c, various supply invoices, a Fisher body manual and original 1931 handbooks for Buick specifications and adjustments.

This and 60 other classic cars will be sold at auction, on March 4th at Allington, Chippenham, Wiltshire SN14 6LJ
