The Bentley 3-Litre Tourer by Vanden Plas is surely one of the prettiest of all the vintage sports touring designs. Add the power of the 4½ – Litre unit and the result is perhaps the ultimate all round vintage sports car. As such the Bentley 3/41/2-Litre remains one of the most popular and sought after of all vintage cars.

The example offered for sale here, chassis no. 604, was completed in June 1924 of the shorter 9ft9” wheelbase (speed model) chassis. Factory records indicate that it was fitted with engine no. 614 and coachwork by Storey and Co. The original owner is noted as a H. J. Shaw of Haslemere, Surrey. In late 1926 the car was purchased by a D. Briggs of Normanton, Yorkshire who kept the car until 1939 when it was purchased by E. Body of Bedfordshire. The Bentley Driver’s Club has the complete ownership history of chassis no. 604 between 1950 and the present day. Their records also show that the original body was removed quite early on and that by the 1950s chassis no. 604 was fitted with a crude two-seater body. By 1976 the car had been fitted with replica Vanden Plas four-seat touring coachwork. At that stage retained the original engine, no. 614. By the 1990s ‘604’ had been fitted with a 41/2-Litre engine.

The current owner, a vintage Bentley collector, acquired ‘604’ last year. The 41/2-Litre engine fitted to ‘604’ was the correct engine from his original 41/2-Litre Vanden Plas Tourer and this was removed and re-fitted to said 4½-Litre Tourer. The 41/2-Litre unit from ‘604’ has been replaced with another 41/2-Litre engine. Numbered D.M.K.1, the engine is of the desirable late heavy crank type and was built up by Duncan McKenzie.

A genuine short chassis speed model and fitted with the desirable late heavy crank 41/2-Litre engine, this handsome vintage Bentley would be ideal for the ever popular endurance rally events such as the Flying Scotsman and RAC 1000 mile trail and would also be suitable for a plethora of VSCC and BDC organized events.
