As a copy of the original factory data card confirms, this 190SL was built in July 1961 and was originally black (paint code DB40), the same colour it wears to this day. A European-spec LHD model, it was reputedly bought new by an American soldier serving in Germany who then took it back to Kansas with him when he returned home. It reputedly stayed in the same family until earlier this year.
In original and largely unmolested condition throughout, it is basically sound in most important respects and is being offered here as a straightforward restoration project. A ‘matching numbers’ machine which retains its original engine and gearbox, it also retains its original dashboard clock which is not visible in the photos because it had been removed for safekeeping during shipping. Once hooked up to a battery and an external fuel supply, the engine was coaxed into life fairly easily, although it will doubtless require attention following many years in storage. Retaining its original hood frame and rather scruffy soft top, it also retains its original tool kit, wheel-changing kit and spare wheel. It comes with the aforementioned data card, a US Certificate of Title and a Nova reference and Customs papers showing that all duties have been paid.
