Well presented Model A Roadster Pick-Up
Imported by the vendor from California in 2018
Supplied with its US Title and a current V5C
The Model T Ford was launched in 1908 and was the world’s first mass produced car, making motorised transport affordable for ordinary working class Americans. The relatively low buying price was made possible by Henry Ford’s adoption of assembly line production instead of individual hand building every vehicle, as had happened previously. By 1926 even Henry Ford had to admit that his Model T, the car that ‘put the world on wheels’, had become obsolete and it was rumoured that many US states were considering banning the Model T due to its thought to be unsafe hand operated braking system. The company terminated Model T’ production in May 1927, immediately after the 15 millionth example had rolled off the line, despite having nothing to immediately replace it with. Ford authorised the development of its successor, with Henry himself directing the design team whilst his son Edsel oversaw the styling. The result was a longer, lower-slung chassis retaining transverse-leaf suspension, but significantly more refined, together with a much needed four wheel braking system. The engine was designed by Howard Hicks, a 3285cc, L-Head four-cylinder developing 40bhp, twice the Model T’s output, and featuring coil ignition with an integral water pump, and when mated to a three-speed manual gearbox, gave a top speed of 65mph. Launched in December 1927, the Model A was greeted with unprecedented demand, with over 400, 000 pre-orders before the vehicle had even been seen.
This beautifully presented Model A was imported from California by the vendor in 2018 and registered with DVLA in 2019 on its age related number BF8834. After a year of cleaning and investigating the vehicle for its repair and restoration requirements, it became a ‘Covid Project’ to bring it back to its former glory. With the help of local classic vehicle restorers and vintage parts specialists, the restoration project consumed the next 4 years, steadily returning the vehicle back to its original and authentic condition. Since completing the job, the vendor has enjoyed driving it around his local country roads, especially with his grandchildren, and has also taken it to a few classic vehicle events. When out and about, it has always attracted plenty of attention, being a car that is rarely seen on UK roads. The Model A typifies 1930s America, and while millions were built, many survivors have been heavily customised, being the go-to starting point for ‘Hot Rod’ conversions. The chassis number quoted is from the V5C, not clearly visible on the body. It will be supplied with some original US paperwork, a copy of the Californian Title, and a current V5C.
