Just into the 20th century, furniture makers began making Woodys as a sideline to their businesses. They would purchase an automobile without a body and build a body from wood. These custom vehicles were often set up like small buses and were commonly used by resorts to transport guests to and from railroad depots. They werent called woodys back then. Rather, they were known as depot hacks. In the horse- drawn days, a hack was a wagon.Fast forward to 1949 in the month of January when this Woody truck was purchased by the original owner from a New Jersey Dodge dealership. She was named Old Betsy! Old Betsy has seen its days with the original owner as a delivery truck, a newspaper truck, a farm vehicle, a commuter, a moving van and most often; a family vehicle, This 1949 Woody truck remained with its original owner and then passed to his family for nearly 70 years. A trail of documentation including its original paperwork, photos and the original title are still with this Woody. Its historic timeline is simply incredible.
Exterior
The original wood cargo/passenger compartment, and roof did not survive and was totally rebuilt.by the last owner, the original owners son. A frame-off rebuild was painstakingly taken on, done by hand, and done very well. A peek of the underside shows virtually new wood throughout, new ceiling, and new floor deck. Interior doors are unfinished finished but are covered. A marine varnish brings out the White Ash and Poplar exterior which has very good fit and finish. The body could use some love to bring the truck to the next level. It has been decades since the last restoration which was done by the original owner. There are hundreds of photos of the restoration and various stages of this Truck throughout time.
Interior
Original interior front bench seat was recovered, re-covered though only 1 of the 3 seats are left. Metal dash, and original gauges are present, excepting the temperature gauge which has been replaced. Floors were redone and are in excellent condition. The bed liner is painted plywood and was done during the restoration. A well-used steering wheel tells the story of this vehicle and its uses, and if this truck could talk, it would do so for a long time...A Campbell Body Works emblem is on the roof next to the interior light.
Drivetrain
The Chrysler 230ci inline 6- cylinder engine has been rebuilt at some point, maybe even twice but it runs like a top... It seriously does! It was rebuilt by a company in Orlando Florida name of Auto Machine Company (see numbered plaque on engine shots). A valve job, as well as a new head gasket were installed during the rebuild. The 3-speed transmission connects to a 4:11 gear ratio. You will not be cruising down the highway at 70mph but 50-55mph is not out of the question as long as your not planning on taking it cross-country! During the rebuild, all brakes, bushings, and suspension as well as wheel cylinders, and master cylinder were replaced. It rides really nice but it is still a 70 year old truck.
It is extremely rare to find a vehicle that has been in the same family for its whole life, especially for this length of time. That fact increases significantly if the vehicle is a Dodge B1B-108 Woody. This once completely restored Dodge truck is in great overall condition in appearance and mechanically. It is an impressive driver-quality truck and should be left as it is today however, it would be an excellent candidate for another frame-off restoration at any time in the future. Either way, its history will live on. This Dodge comes with all the documentation of its life, its functions and its whereabouts with one family. This includes the original Dodge Factory build sheet. 2 binders full of information, original titles, receipts and hundreds of photos dating back to 1949. The nice thing about this vehicle is that you can literally drive it away, do nothing to it, and enjoy the beautiful body, rebuilt engine and mechanicals, and be proud of this true piece of history which is in all likely-hood, the last of its kind.
