Seller's comments about 1962' Lancia Flavia Vignale
This lot will be auctioned via Iconic Auctioneers, The Iconic Sale at the BRDC Classic 2026 - Collectors' Cars on Saturday the 25th of July, The Wing, Silverstone Circuit, NN12 8TN. Before its legendary successes on the special stages of the World Rally Championship, Lancia had already earned a reputation as one of Europe's most technically innovative motor manufacturers. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s the company produced beautifully engineered cars that consistently challenged convention, and the Flavia was perhaps the finest expression of that philosophy. Introduced in 1961, it became Italy's first series-production front-wheel drive motor car, combining an aluminium horizontally opposed four-cylinder engine, four-wheel disc brakes and exceptional refinement at a time when such engineering was almost unheard of.Whilst the Flavia was conceived as an executive saloon, Lancia commissioned several of Italy's finest coachbuilders to create exclusive derivatives. Among the most elegant was the Vignale Convertible, introduced during 1962 and styled by Giovanni Michelotti. Built on the shorter coupé platform, production totalled just 1, 601 examples, of which only 724 were powered by the original 1. 5-litre twin-carburettor engine. Just 132 examples were completed during 1962 and it is believed that only around 40 right-hand drive cars were produced, making this a particularly rare and desirable example.A previous owner acquired the car as a restoration project before commissioning an extensive refurbishment whilst carefully preserving its originality and character. Throughout that ownership, maintenance and mechanical care were entrusted to renowned Lancia specialists Omicron. Our vendor acquired the Flavia in 2021 and, having seen only limited use during his ownership, now offers the car for sale. Prior to the auction it has been recently recommissioned and is ready to be enjoyed once again.Finished today in Rosso with a beautifully retrimmed cream leather interior, the classic Italian colour combination perfectly complements the elegant Vignale coachwork. Correspondence within the history file from a previous long-term owner confirms that the car originally left the factory finished in an attractive dark green-grey metallic, although it is understood that the change to its current colour predates the restoration. The beautifully appointed cabin retains all the charm for which early Flavias are admired, with its wood-rimmed steering wheel, distinctive ribbon speedometer, elegant instrumentation and restrained Italian design.Mechanically, the Flavia remains every bit as impressive as its styling suggests. The compact aluminium flat-four, breathing through twin carburettors, delivers smooth, refined performance whilst the advanced front-wheel drive layout and four-wheel disc brakes remain a reminder of just how far ahead of the curve Lancia's engineers were in the early 1960s. It is a wonderfully civilised grand tourer, ideally suited to relaxed cross-country motoring or extended continental journeys.Accompanying the car is a comprehensive history file containing its V5C, restoration records, servicing invoices and correspondence from previous custodians. Also included is material relating to the car's feature in Classic & Sports Car magazine in 2005, further enhancing the provenance of this particularly well-documented example.Elegant, technically sophisticated and wonderfully understated, the Flavia Vignale Convertible represents one of the finest expressions of Lancia's golden era. Combining rare Vignale coachwork, pioneering engineering and beautifully balanced touring manners, this charming early example offers an increasingly rare opportunity to acquire one of Italy's most accomplished and distinctive 1960s open grand tourers, equally at home on a relaxed Sunday drive or an extended continental tour.
