This 12/60 TL Beetleback is one of few surviving examples still carrying its original Carbodies body—many examples have been fitted with replica coachwork.

The body has recently been stripped to bare metal and repainted in cellulose and new wings have been made, correctly in steel, and to the original pattern. The old wings were weary and the decision was taken to replace them rather than weld in many patches. The chrome work was re-plated and much of the interior trim replaced.

The last substantial engine overhaul was completed out of necessity in early 2003 when the original crankcase was effectively destroyed due to a wayward con-rod! The engine was removed from the chassis being dispatched to Tony Leech’s Caleng engineering limited in Warwickshire. Tony Leech turned to Mike Hurst of Longstone Alvis Spares who had a TL crankcase, which was mated with the original Block and Sump. The head was also found to be cracked, and rather than risk an unsuccessful repair, Mike was successfully looked to again. The replacement crankshaft was duly fitted along with phoenix rods and new pistons. The replacement cylinder head was reconditioned with guides and springs. The final task was to recondition the radiator which was undertaken by Vintage Radiators who fitted a new bottom tank at the same time. The half shafts were also replaced in 2004. Another important invoice on file is for the steering box shaft kit, which was a highlighted 12/60 safety issue around the year 2000. More recently the brakes have been relined and all six 20” wheels have been re-built by MWS International and fitted with Blockley tyres.

The engine starts and runs very well with excellent oil pressure. The car performs well on the road and is a delight to drive.
