Commentaires du vendeur sur 1949' Land Rover Series 1

For sale, THROUGH JOHN BROWN 4X4 LTD, on Behalf of Benjamin Fogle, Land Rover® Series 1 80" in Deep Bronze Green (1949).

We are delighted to present for sale, on behalf of Ben Fogle, this Superb Lights Behind the Grill 80" Land Rover®. This vehicle was sold by us to Ben to be used as the vehicle for his UK Tour which formed a large part of his recent book 'Land Rover'.

The Mistress was taken through England and into Wales, where it posed for a photograph in Redwharf Bay. This was the original site of the drawing made in the sand which began the Land Rover® Story. Having been fitted with a 200TDI, and serviced within an inch of its life, did really well. After falling in love with it, Ben retained the vehicle and has used in and around his London Home and Central London.

Unfortunately, due to work commitments, Ben is unable to use it enough to warrant its keeping. We have therefore been instructed to place it on the open market on his behalf. This Land Rover® is now famous, and can be read about in his current 'Land Rover' Publication, and as such is a very interesting vehicle - not only is it superb to drive, and very early, but it has that fantastic history which is sure to make it a great investment. We can now also say that, following extensive use and a long road trip, that it is a superbly reliable and capable vehicle. We were able to keep up with modern traffic on the M1 for much of the journey!

Please find below the original advert for the vehicle:

200TDI Diesel. MOT and Tax Exempt

Here for sale, we have a very early 1949 Series 1, rebuilt on a galvanised chassis in recent years. When this work was done, the vehicle was redesigned to work, and function better on modern roads - a 200tdi engine was fitted, along with an overdrive. (The logbook is amended to reflect these upgrades). A kenlowe fan reduces power wastage and keeps things cool in the hottest climates! This is coupled to a Series 3 gearbox, which enjoys synchro on all but 1st gear. The addition of the overdrive and modern power unit completely transform the driving experience and reliability - no, you won't impress the purists, but who cares ? - you can really use this truck regularly, and even for longer trips, and it should cover those miles with absolute ease. If you ever felt the need to return it to standard, a 1.6L Land Rover®, or later 2L unit could be retro fitted.....but we wouldn't bother - that's not the brief here. It's designed to be MOT exempt, tax exempt, a good investment, and most importantly, a vehicle that can be used for dogs, kids, adventures and the likes....it's not perfect, but that is its charm.....if you did want it all pretty, let us know - we can do that too after all, it is a "lights behind the grill, pre 1950 R866 chassis, and they are rare!

Out on the road, at 40mpg and over 100 Bhp/ton, the driving experience is - well - unique! It's not slow, it's not heavy, and it's not unreliable!!

On the inside, there's 3 smart and probably recent seats, and the rear, although unfitted, is tidy. Bench seats could be installed with belts if required at extra cost. There's a heater fitted which blows, but is not currently piped for heat - Series 1s rarely had heaters, but we suppose something to blow the air around may help with demisting!

Externally, the vehicle hides its non standard and upgraded spec well....it's all largely period, even down to the canvas. There are also some really nice touches like the trafficators, which still work - very amusing. A good set of military tyres surround the period rims. There are no silly additions externally, and the various attributes one would expect top see remain - the bulkhead mounted running lights, grill, bonnet furniture (for wind in the hair, screen down fun) and all that sort of thing.

Unbelievably, this relic has only had 4 former keepers, so it's not been far in its already lengthy life - and we would imagine she will easily double her years without a problem - and all for the cost of a years classic insurance at £100.

If you are looking for a numbers matching 80" (we have others - please ask) then this is not the one for you. If you love the idea of one of these, but actually want to use it for treks, then it's certainly worth considering.
