For sale at Gateway Classic Cars in our Houston showroom is this all metal Über-custom 1937 Ford 78 Coupe. This multiple-award winning custom is an amazing example of the combined talents of a number of the top names in the custom street rod world. It has its own name, even; having been dubbed "Grand Larsony" as a tribute to its owner, who found it in a barn in Colorado back in 1984. He found it in fully operational condition, and with only 9965 miles on the clock, he could tell that it had great potential to be restored to its original glory. However, its new owner had a vision that went far beyond a mere restoration. He began with reaching out to Darrell Mayabb, who was contracted to come up with a design that would incorporate what a '37 Ford would look like with a '39 Deluxe front end, a '40 hood, a '48 rear window, and a lethal dose of "chop, channel, section, and shave", all rounded and smoothed into one cohesive bad-axe rod. From Darrell’s concept design, it then went to Donn Lowe, of Lowes Customs, where it was all brought together into a one-piece body, all steel and leaded, and wrapped in the paint scheme that Darrell Mayabb cooked up. It hit the streets in Oct 1988 at the Lake Havasu City “Run to the Sun”, where it was a top ten award winner in its first event; and it has never looked back, grabbing attention and awards at outings around the country. In due time, “Grand Larsony” spent time with Boyd Coddington’s American Hot Rods for a paint update, new interior, and drivetrain. The new paint was masterfully laid down by Charley Hutton, and the interior was given a completely new full custom leather interior by Gabe’s. This work of art now represents the best of these creative masters. Since its refresh, "Grand Larsony" has rubbed shoulders with the best: it was featured at the Hot Rod Homecoming event in Pomona, California in 2013, honoring its 1990 Hot Rod magazine feature. It later appeared on Wayne Carini's show, “Chasing Cars” in the Tribute to Boyd Coddington episode. Additional Body details: chopped 2”, Sectioned 2”, frenched headlights and taillights, '48 Ford rear window, door corners rounded, rolled rear pan, '39 Ford front fenders, '40 hood grafted to '37 humpback body, all seams filled and leaded, hidden door hinges, and steel running boards molded to body. Additional Interior details: English leather by Gabe with black inserts, leather-covered dash with aluminum insert, VDO vintage gauges, custom center console stack with hidden switches and stereo, Alpine receiver/cd with 10 speakers and amp rack, power windows, aluminum tilt/telescope steering column, leather-wrapped wheel, and custom-built aluminum sill plates. Additional powertrain details: fresh ZZ383 383 CID V8 roller motor with polished intake and Holley carb, Zex nitrous with purge, chrome plated aluminum accessories, custom valve covers and air cleaner with matching accents, 700R4 4-speed automatic transmission with Art Carr valvebody, and Borla stainless exhaust with custom oval rear exit. Additional chassis details: completely reworked frame, filled and molded, Heidts super ride, painted and chrome plated, chrome plated Heidts IRS rear, and Wilwood disc brakes. With only 384 miles since a restoration update, maintaining and paying respect to its heritage builders, it is reliable, fast, and beautiful.
