Though the newcomer was intended to appeal to owner-drivers, many examples were in fact sold to customers with chauffeurs. Power came from an enlarged version of the straight-six unit used in the 20hp. Now of 3, 699cc, it made for swifter acceleration and a higher top speed – up to 75mph, depending on the chosen body. The four-speed manual gearbox featured the manufacturer’s traditional right-hand change and was equipped with synchromesh on the top two ratios from 1932 onwards. The substantial chassis sported rigid axles front and rear suspended on semi-elliptic leaf springs. The four-wheel braking was mechanically servo-assisted. In 1936, the company opted to increase the performance once more, further enlarging the engine to 4, 257cc to create the 25/ 30, of which 1, 201 examples were made before the model was superseded by the Wraith in 1938. With its elegance and upper-crust connotations, the 25/ 30 became a prominent silver-screen star, most notably in The Naked Truth and Death on the Nile.Understood to have been ordered through Rootes of Piccadilly during 1936, this elegant 25/ 30 was first registered as ‘MH 189’ and bodied by Thrupp & Maberly as an attractive Sports Saloon with division. Said to have been previously in the ownership of the 5th Baron Lilford of Northampton, in its later years it was laid up for some twenty-two years and re-registered as ‘LSL 759’ by the previous owner, before our vendor acquired it for his personal collection in 2023.Found by our vendor to be very original thanks to a believed-genuine 47, 500 recorded miles at the time, he opted to entrust the respected Rolls-Royce specialist Overton Vehicle Overhauls of Southsea-on-Sea to perform a complete mechanical recommissioning, which included a full engine strip-down overhaul that included the fitment of new cylinder liners, a re-cored radiator and new hoses, a fuel system overhaul which included a new SU fuel pump, a brake overhaul and a new set of Blockley tyres. The long-term proprietor of Overton, Ted Overton, remarked to our vendor that it was one of the most original Rolls-Royces he’d ever had the pleasure of working on and found that most of the internal parts were correctly stamped with the engine number, hence he opted to keep as much intact as possible. Now said to be in a most usable condition, with its mechanical condition said to be ‘tip-top’ by our vendor, this handsome car is being offered to the market complete with its original toolkit. Prospective purchasers will have a hard time deciding whether to preserve it in its current patinated condition or restore it cosmetically to their taste.PLEASE NOTE: The DVLA have incorrectly recorded the chassis number as ‘GOL5H’. ** Bidding will take place live at the venue, online via our H&H website, by telephone and commission - T&Cs apply**Entry by catalogue and can be purchased for £20 (admits 2 people)
