1925 DELAGE D. I.
2 Seater Tourer with dickey By Page & Hunt.
OR 8661
A beautifully Patinated DI in super driving condition.
This delightful and amazingly original Delage, was supplied as a rolling chassis, to coachbuilders Page & Hunt of Wrecclesham near Farnham Surrey, formed by Arthur Page and captain JO Hunt RA, with showrooms in Guildford, they specialised in producing custom bodywork for quality cars, these included Bentley, Lagonda, Rolls Royce and as represented here; Delage.
First registered in 1925 OR 8661, chassis number 17442 is believed to have been first purchased by Stanley Jaye, a member of a high-profile Aldershot family, they were a large retailer with outlets specialising in Outfitting, ironmongery and home furnishing, no doubt successful enough to fund the purchase and coachbuilding of a sporting Delage.
By 1963 this important car was a non-runner languishing in a field behind the premises of John & Richard Potter, subsequently purchased by Edward Preston, he returned the car to the road and it was re-registered for a time as GF 8061, various owners came and went the Delage travelling the country from Liverpool to Scotland.
Well-known car to the Delage register, this rakish DI has been cherished by previous owners, those of note include Alan Giles who purchased 17442 in 1994 and was responsible for much of the more recent restoration work and recovery of its original registration number OR 8661. Later the car passed into the hands of well-respected restorer Richard Hutchings
very much an oily rag survivor, it remains in superb mechanical condition and is testament to careful conservation and use by its various custodians, with a recent re-wire in period cloth covered wiring, a new set of wheels and tyres and engine rebuilt, it is believed to DIS specification , OR 8661 is ready for immediate use.
Running exceedingly well, with one of the nicest gearchanges of any pre-war car, I can highly recommend this DI to prospective purchasers, with its handsome English coachwork, rakish V windscreen, tall 21inch wheels, easily retractable roof and dickey seat in the rear for children or in-law! One can easily see, why Delage used to regularly claim ‘Frances Finest Car’ in their adverts and you might be hard pushed to disagree, certainly this DI represents superb value in comparison to contemporaries such as Voisin, Bugatti, Bentley etc, viewings welcome at my workshops on the Surrey/ West Sussex borders.
