This particular example benefits from a galvanised chassis rebuild in times past, with both mechanical and internal upgrades to improve the ownership experience… read on below!Externally, as the photos show, there are a host of features one might hope to find on a “good” Series 2a – starting from the front – the 3D number plates, the front bumper lifting eyes, the wing top mounted mirrors, matching 600×16 bonnet mounted spare, recent canvas with side windows, rear grab handles and mud flaps – etc etc. The added bonus of a set of original 600×16 tyres means both light steering and nippier acceleration, as well as reducing overall height, which is worth mentioning if you’ve got a restricted height garage to keep it in – or you have a work car park which a Range Rover won’t go into. We don’t often see Series 2s at HQ finished in Keswick Green – and we think that a prospective purchaser would agree it really looks stunning from all angles, against the nice galvanised details of the front bumper and those original number plates! On the inside, there are three front seats, all with seat belts, along with deluxe matting to the footwells. For the upcoming colder months, this Series benefits from heating with front de-misting to prevent icing up, which is extremely welcome. The rear houses a pair of bench seats to bring seating for seven people including the driver, with a load mat to the floor area. A recent canvas, which includes side windows, not only helps the driver with visibility (through easier blind spot checks!) but also gives a light and airy experience to the cabin… with a particular benefit to those travelling in the rear – a very nice touch – along with a seat of tailgate chain covers to prevent these from rattling about during transit.Out on the road is where this Series 2a really shines though – we often find that rebuilt Series Land Rovers feel well sorted behind the wheel – and this one is no exception. The Weber carburettor affords more power over standard, whilst those wheels and tyres previously mentioned give lighter than usual steering and improved acceleration, both of which are welcome if doing back road or town work.. particularly if bay parking. The parabolic springs improve the ride too – if you live in an area with poor roads (don’t we all) or speed bumps, you’ll notice the difference when doing the school run. It delivers a pleasing period drive, enhanced by the upgrades, and with the benefit of carrying the whole family around (or taking HQ staff for a chip butty in Thirsk… ask how we know!), this is about as enjoyable as a Series can really be in period format. There is a receipt in the history file dated 13/ 05/ 2020 for a full engine rebuild by Turner Engineering, which included both conversion to unleaded fuel and the fitment of a performance cylinder head – you can certainly feel this when you “stamp on the throttle” – this is a Series which the owner will run out of nerve before it runs out of go…. this bill comes to £4164 inc VAT – and whilst not really required – shows the level of attention to detail in the rebuild process and provides peace of mind to both HQ and to the new owner. In summary then, if you are looking for a Series 2a Land Rover which can carry all the family, which also benefits from tax exemption, classic insurance and no MOT required, then this could be for you. The galvanised chassis means it should stand the test of time well – especially when one considers that when the galvanising does eventually come to the end of its life – there is a brand new chassis underneath – and many of this vehicles peers in terms of age are still running original chassis’ with no problems whatsoever and plenty of life yet, despite being 60+ years old.Priced at £26, 995
