Launched in 1963, the Mercedes-Benz SL W113 has a 'Bauhaus' minimalism that gives it a timeless elegance. The design coined by Paul Bracq is devoid of baroque details and sporting pretensions and the most sui generis component is linked to the nickname ‘Pagoda’, a reference to the shape of the hardtop identical to the roofs of Japanese temples.
Despite being more of a luxury convertible than a sports roadster, the 280 SL is, even today, a car with very contemporary performance and technological solutions! With 4-wheel disc brakes, 4-speed synchronized manual gearbox, Bosch multipoint mechanical injection and power steering, this fifty-year-old is one of the most pleasant classics to use and most similar to a modern car.
The 2.8-liter six-cylinder in-line engine delivers 170 HP and 240 Nm. Significant values in 1969 and which translate into very quick use – the 280 is capable of reaching a top speed of 200 km/h and can reach 100 km/h in about 9 seconds!
This example was sold new in Portugal, in May 1969, and is equipped with a hard top and factory air conditioning, a rare extra that greatly increases the pleasure of use. It underwent a total restoration, which exceeded 70 thousand euros, with all documentation, invoices and photographic records present.
