While the miles glide imperceptibly beneath you, you sit comfortably on a wide leather seat that would not look out of place in any luxury saloon. In front of you stretches an immense bonnet under which a 6. 75-litre V8 quietly and modestly does its work. In the distance, you can just make out the sensual shapes of the famous little Spirit of Ecstasy statue, a reminder of a forbidden love long gone. With the roof neatly folded under the new tonneau, you can feel the wind brushing past your face as you enjoy Sinatra's sweet voice coming from the original 8-track, still present in the car.
Relaxation
With the slightest movement, you operate the steering wheel and brakes, after which the car listens instantly and willingly. Despite its 45 years of age, this Rolls-Royce still manages to achieve an extremely high level of comfort that even some of the most modern cars cannot match. This is all thanks to the high-quality, fully independent suspension and an ingenious hydraulic self-levelling system. And of course, to the lovely eight cylinder engine with silky smooth 3-speed automatic gearbox.
Although one does not talk about power when dealing with a 'Rolls', we can reveal that the 220 hp is enough to take this weighty car to a top speed of 200 km/ h. But of course, that is not what this car is about. This is automotive relaxation at the highest level. And speaking of relaxation, both doors have secret hatches behind which shot glasses and some bottles of brandy are hidden. Just so you know.
The Corniche
The Rolls-Royce Corniche, named after the French word meaning as much as coastal road, first appeared on the market in 1971. Based on the Silver Shadow, it was available as a two-door coupe and a convertible. In 1977, both models received a modest update that included slightly different bumpers and an dual air-conditioning system. In time, the coupe was dropped and only the convertible remained, which was also available as a Bentley Continental from 1984.
The Rolls-Royce Corniche Convertible we have the honour to offer, chassis number DRG31358, was built in 1978 at Mulliner Park Ward's workshop in London after which it was shipped to the United States that same year. There, the car stayed for about 25 years before coming to the Netherlands with only 68. 158 miles on the odometer.
The car on offer
Since then, the car has had two private owners, who have maintained the car exceptionally well. The entire hydraulic system has been overhauled, as well as the carburettors. A new fabric hood has been fitted, the brakes have been completely checked and renewed where necessary, and the bodywork has been brought into good condition. The interior is completely original but still in good and exceptionally charming condition. And with only around 83. 000 miles, this is a very fine example of a ‘78 Roll-Royce Corniche Convertible.
