The Toyota Sports 800 was Toyota's first production sports car.
It entered production in 1965 with chassis code UP15. It used the mechanics of the «Publica 700», but with a displacement increased to 798cc and two carburetors, which gave the Sports 800 45 horsepower, enough to propel the light car up to speeds of 160 km/h.
The body design by designer Shozo Sato was among the most aerodynamic at the time and was also one of the first cars to use a targa-style roof.
With a total production of just 3,131 cars, only 300 were left-hand drive, intended primarily for the Okinawa market (which had been occupied by the Americans and where traffic traveled on the right side of the road instead of the left like the rest of the country). Japan).
