Seller's comments about 1936' Austin 12/6
1936 Austin 12/ 6 Open Road Tourer.
This was a rare car when new, most open road tourers were 10/ 4 or 12/ 4 models (so somewhat under powered), this one being a later 12/ 6 is factory fitted from new with a 16hp six cylinder engine because the 12hp engine was a little slow on the hills!
The Open Road Tourer was the up market tourer, with cleverly designed metal framed side screens that stow inside the doors (there is a screw that can be undone with an old 1p piece in the top middle of each door trim panel, which then folds down to reveal the side screen!). When the hood is up and the side screens fitted it is, according to the advertising "thoroughly proof against storms"!
This example is one that has been maintained and used throughout its life and is in very original order, it is sound in chassis and body, runs, drives, goes and stops as it should with a very pleasing six cylinder burble from the exhaust. It isn't going to win any concours prizes, it is "delightfully scruffy"!
There is evidence that it was repainted in about 20 years ago, it has various bits touched up, odd rusty spots on the wings (not big and not that leave a hole, the metal all looks sound), the doors all open and shut fine, it seems structurally solid.
The seats are original, a bit scruffy with some patches on the front seats, the hood has been patched (not very nicely!), it goes up and down fine, and doesn't have any holes in it, but if you are going to do lots of driving in the rain you would probably want to replace it!
The better bits:
I have just had the wheels sandblasted and powder coated and fitted new Lucas tyres, the wheels looked scruffy and the tyres were all split and perished.
I have just relined the clutch and fitted the crank case rear oil seal conversion kit from Austins of Old Arley, (these engines originally had no rear oil seal and vented the crankcase though the back of the crankshaft, which wasn't one of Austin's better ideas as the clutch gets covered in oil and slips!), this conversion stops that happening.
I have checked all the brakes, greased and checked levels as appropriate, changed the oil and fitted six new plugs.
Going back further in the history file, the engine was stripped in 2010, fitted with new pistons, the head skimmed etc, in 2005 the kingpins were replaced amongst other things.
The car drives well for a prewar car, the steering is light and precise, the four speed gearbox changes easily with syncro on 2nd, 3rd and 4th, the relined clutch is smooth. There are no nasty noises or smoke. It brakes as intended and well enough if you drive sensibly.
The engine starts easily with the electric fuel pump filling the carb, oil pressure is good, all the other gauges work as they should including the clock (as long as you remember to wind it once a week!).
There is a fair bit of history, lost of factory handbooks, spares lists etc, two old green logbooks, a blue V5C and the up to date red one, the registration number is original and transferrable (that would be a great shame after 87 years!). There are various invoices for work done over the years, club literature, etc, etc.
There it is, you can hop in it and use it to go to the shops, the pub, etc and have a lot of fun and not worry about it being scratched, or you could go right through it and make it as shiny as all the other ones at shows and worry about it whenever you park it or just improve it a bit as you go, the choice belongs to the next owner.
