1950 BENTLEY VI SPECIAL ROADSTER RIGHT HAND DRIVE
DATE OF MANUFACTURE: 1950 | COLOUR: RACING GREEN | INTERIOR TRIM: TAN LEATHER
LUX CLASSICS ARE DELIGHTED TO OFFER THIS EXCEPTIONAL AND COLLECTABLE RIGHT HAND DRIVE BENTLEY VI SPECIAL ROADSTER CRAFTED BY THE CHELSEA WORKSHOP, IN PERIOD COLOURS OF BRITISH RACING GREEN & TAN LEATHER.
MODEL HISTORY & PRODUCTION
'This delightful, craftsman built motor car shows what can be achieved using a R-Type, or in this case an MKVI Bentley chassis, as the foundation of a sportscar, the like of which should really have been built by Bentley Motors.' – Ray Roberts, 'Bentley Specials & Special Bentleys'.
For all their many virtues, the 'Silent Sportscar' and its post-WW2 successors, the MkVI and R-Type, seem to some Bentley enthusiasts to lack the character of their Cricklewood-built predecessors; not for them the comfort of being wafted along in complete silence at 90mph! Over recent decades prices fetched by genuine vintage Bentleys have risen to levels well beyond the reach of all but the wealthiest; this fact and the absence of anything remotely resembling its vintage touring models from the post-war Bentley range has meant that enthusiasts with a yen for top-down, wind-in-the-hair excitement had little choice but to opt for a conversion. Fortunately there has for many years been a plentiful supply of 'standard steel' saloons too badly corroded to warrant restoration, thus providing suitable chassis for transformation into something more exciting.
THIS VEHICLE
Initially a 1950 Bentley MK VI four-door standard steel saloon (body number 3437) painted black with brown interior, but re-bodied by Chelsea Workshop and re-engineered to its current specification as Bentley Donnington Sports. This is one of two specials built, with five former owners:
- 1950's - Sidney Bayes - Hull
- 1960's - Nicholas Vebel - Yorkshire
- 1990's - Chelsea Workshop - London
- 2006 - Rt Hon Maurice Robson
- 2016 - Current owner
Photographed in Vol II of Ray Roberts "Bentley Specials and Special Bentleys", he records the work as being carried out by Peter Eatenton and I. G. Hawkins at the Chelsea Workshop.
In superb mechanical fettle throughout, it comes tried and tested ready for any European or UK tour, and a delight to drive.
Included in the history file is a period image of the MK VI with its original four-door body, together with an original delivery receipt and specification dated 29th September 1950 from its supplying dealer ‘The Paragon (Hull) Motor Co Ltd’. And more recently, a number of receipts totalling over £18, 000 for recent works carried out.
It has been extensively used by its current owner, a Bentley Drivers Club member for UK and European tours.
