Seller's comments about 1973' BMW 3.0
History of the BMW E9 Coupé
The BMW E9 Coupé is without question one of the most elegant classics in automotive history. Its flowing lines, balanced proportions and sporting presence already made it an exceptional car in its own time. After BMW presented the 2800 CS at the 1968 IAA in Frankfurt, the next stage of development followed in 1971: the 3. 0 series, which also included the BMW 3. 0 CSA, the rare automatic variant.
The shape of the E9 remains a masterpiece to this day. The long bonnet, the delicate window line without a B-pillar and the light, graceful silhouette give the vehicle an unmistakable elegance. Characteristic is the famous Hofmeister kink on the C-pillar, named after BMW’s chief designer Wilhelm Hofmeister. At the same time, Italian influences are clearly recognisable: already the 3200 CS, designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro at Bertone, featured this striking design language. In the E9, German engineering and Italian styling merge into a coupé of remarkable lightness.
The 3. 0 CSA used the refined 3. 0-litre straight-six carburettor engine, which worked harmoniously with the then-modern three-speed automatic transmission. While the manual 3. 0 CS emphasised the sporty character, the 3. 0 CSA was aimed at drivers who valued smooth, confident performance without sacrificing typical BMW driving dynamics. With its balanced weight distribution and precise handling, the CSA offered capable yet relaxed motoring. On country roads as well as long motorway stretches, it showed its strengths as an elegant grand tourer.
While the 3. 0 CS was produced in comparatively large numbers, the BMW 3. 0 CSA remained far rarer: around 4, 457 units were built between 1971 and 1975 – significantly fewer than the manual version and therefore particularly sought after today.
The BMW 3. 0 CSA remains an elegant, rare classic that harmoniously combines comfort and character. Anyone driving a CSA today experiences not only the relaxed composure of an automatic coupé of its era but also a fascinating piece of BMW history – a vehicle that continues to captivate and enjoys ever-growing appreciation among collectors.
History of the BMW 3. 0 CSA offered here – SSC-653
First registration: 17. 10. 1973 | VIN 22327xx | Original colour “Turquoise metallic” (065)
The BMW 3. 0 CSA offered here is one of those rare examples that preserve the spirit of the early 1970s in especially stylish form. As the automatic version within the famous E9 series, it was delivered from the factory with an exceptionally elegant configuration – and today presents itself in a condition that is rarely found on the market.
The original colour “Turquoise metallic” is among the rarest and most spectacular paint shades of the E9 era. Depending on the light, the finish reveals a fascinating blend of depth, freshness and metallic shimmer that masterfully highlights the coupé’s fine, almost floating design. An E9 in this colour is a true rarity and catches the eye of any connoisseur.
Inside, you are greeted by leather upholstery in “Natur”, a bright, warm shade that harmonises perfectly with the turquoise exterior. Door panels, seats and centre console appear coherent and authentic. The tinted glazing provides pleasantly softened light and emphasises the elegant lines of the model-typical window design.
A period-correct Becker Europa Kurier radio completes the classic, refined atmosphere.
The installed engine is matching numbers and offers superb running refinement.
Ignition, carburettors and automatic transmission operate precisely and reliably – the result of consistent care and regular maintenance by Scuderia Sportiva Colonia.
The body structure is very solid, with excellent panel fit and overall above-average substance. The chrome is in good condition and shows a subtle, charming patina – exactly the right amount of time-earned character that lends a classic coupé presence and elegance.
This vehicle has been maintained for more than ten years by Scuderia Sportiva Colonia – a name in the BMW classic community that stands for expertise, preservation of value and long-term mechanical care. Its current condition reflects this continuous attention in every respect.
The vehicle’s history is partly traceable; the documentation includes several maintenance records and service receipts.
Summary
A BMW 3. 0 CSA in this rare colour combination of Turquoise metallic and Natur leather is undoubtedly one of the most desirable variants of the E9. Its excellent technical upkeep, coherent originality and elegant appearance make this coupé an exceptional opportunity for enthusiasts and collectors.
An E9 for connoisseurs – stylish, authentic, full of character and ready to drive.
Scuderia Sportiva Colonia has placed special emphasis on these technically sophisticated coupés. Their captivating design, superb chassis, very strong brakes and powerful engine were – in the early 1970s – the benchmark of their time. BMW’s slogan “Freude am Fahren” comes alive in the BMW E9 in a unique and unmistakable way. The interior pampers the owner with luxurious materials; the seats are very comfortable with acceptable lateral support, and the individually framed VDO gauges are elegance almost beyond compare.
And for anyone not entirely satisfied with the colour or options installed: we currently have over ten additional BMW E9s in stock or undergoing restoration.
