This charming BSA Mulliner bodied saloon, referred to as ‘Bertie’, was extensively restored by a car dealer in the 1980s, and then put into storage for thirty years. The car was part exchanged by a customer buying a newer car, and because it was an unusual car the dealer had his team restore it as time allowed. This work included a full repaint and a new rexine roof covering, which has clearly been professionally done. Thirty years in a damp shed hasn’t improved the paint finish, which now has a great patina and doesn’t look restored.
At some time before restoration the car was re-engined with a 1200cc Lanchester LA10 OHV engine. Lanchesters and BSAs were put together in the same factory, and share a number of components including the semi-automatic gearbox and fluid flywheel, so everything fits perfectly. This increases the power from the 24 bhp of the original sidevalve to 30 bhp, which makes a significant difference. During my nine years of ownership the motor ran a big end bearing during a VSCC rally, so I rebuilt the motor with new white metal big ends and mains, rebore, new pistons, every surface machined. I also commissioned Kent camshafts to write the software needed to re-profile the cam, so about 32 bhp is now available! The main improvement is in torque.
I’ve had the rear axle rebuilt with all new bearings and seals, all the brakes re-lined, an electronic regulator conversion, electronic ignition, re-cored radiator, all instruments rebuilt (even the fuel gauge works), all wheels shot-blasted, powder coated with new tyres, new Yuasa battery. Though the interior is mainly original and in fair condition, I have had new carpets made and had the front seat bases upholstered in tan hide (more than £600!). Receipts total more than £13000. The three letter two number plate is transferrable.
The car is dead reliable, starts instantly, and has brilliant brakes and steering. For an early thirties 10hp it goes well (though in objective terms rather slowly). There are no oil leaks. The gearbox has been checked and adjusted by Graham Whitehouse during the motor rebuild, and is working well after this. Spares include two spare gearboxes, more than one engine, rear axle, wheels, spare re-lined brake shoes etc. These spares cost me more than £650.
I am now advertising the car at a new lower price of £7500 . It may also be possible to split the registration number and/ or the spares from the car to reduce the price still further.
