The Datsun 1600/510 sedan was presented at the 1967 “Tokyo Motor Show” and began production in the same year.
At that time, versions 1300 (exclusively for the Japanese market) and 1600 (other markets) were offered. The standard version of the 1600 had 96 horsepower.
In 1968, the SSS sports version (or tri-s as we call it so well in our country) was introduced in the various markets, this version was equipped with a 1600cc engine which, accompanied by two Hitachi Twin carburettors and a camshaft with a distinctive profile, it produced 109 horsepower. The engine was accompanied by a four-speed gearbox, just like the most basic versions of the 1600.
The Datsun 1600/510 design team worked under the guidance of Nissan Chief Design Officer Kazumi Yotsumoto, with Teruo Uchino playing a crucial role in the car's design, especially the body detailing. Influence came from several factors, including Nissan USA President Yutaka Katayama, often referred to as “Mr. K”.
Regarding the engine, Datsun had access to the technology acquired by Nissan during its merger with Prince. One of Prince's engines was the L20, a six-cylinder unit with a single overhead camshaft. For the Datsun 1600/510, two of these cylinders were removed, giving rise to the L16.
In our hands, this unit underwent a complete renovation in terms of sheet metal and painting, in 2021, by the previous owner who was a hatmaker, bodyworker and painter of classic cars, to whom it belonged for 15 years, succeeding another SSS which he maintained for 18 years.
Now in our hands, the engine was opened and completely rebuilt with new material, it had a new aluminum radiator, 2 new Weber carburettors, an exhaust line entirely in stainless steel, a suspension kit, a 5-speed “dog leg” gearbox and the windshields. Shocks were rechromed.
Attached is a dossier with a history of IMT inspections and invoices/proof of the improvements described above.
