Seller's comments about 1980' Ford Escort
FOR SALEJF Classic Cars present for sale an original 1980 Mk2 Ford Escort 1600 Sport in period Ford Diamond WhiteDESCRIPTIONIntroduced in early 1975, the second-generation Ford Escort Mk2 represented a comprehensive evolution of the hugely successful Ford Escort Mk1. While the earlier model had already cemented Ford’s reputation for building compact, affordable performance cars, the Mk2 was designed to modernise the formula while retaining the core characteristics that made the Escort so popularBy 1980 when examples like this Escort 1600 Sport were being produced, the Mk2 had firmly established itself as one of the defining small performance cars of its generation. Its combination of simple mechanical design, strong driving dynamics, and proven motorsport success ensured that the Escort remained highly desirable both as a road car and as a foundation for competition builds. Today surviving examples of the Mk2 Escort particularly the Sport and RS derivatives are widely regarded as important pieces of Ford’s performance heritage and remain highly sought after by classic car enthusiastsEXTERNALPresented in classic Ford Diamond White, this 1980 Mk2 Escort 1600 Sport proudly carries the iconic black Sport decals that instantly identify it as one of the most recognisable performance Escorts of its era. The Mk2’s crisp, purposeful body lines remain as appealing today as when first launched, and the design still looks remarkably fresh despite the car now being well over forty years old.The bodywork retains its original factory panels, which clearly reflect the level of care and attention the car has enjoyed throughout its lifetime. The paint finish remains bright and glossy across every panel, giving the Escort a clean and sharp appearance.Structurally the car is equally impressive. The underside remains extremely solid, free from corrosion having been subject to a fresh re commissioning highlighting the originality and ensuring the undersides preserved for many years to comeFrom the front, the Escort displays all the hallmarks that make the Sport model so distinctive. The black slatted grille sits proudly between the front wings, carrying the correct central Ford badge and flanked by the original specification headlamps. Beneath this the correct Sport front colour coded lower spoilers fitted sitting neatly along the lower valance and giving the car it's purposeful stance. The black metal wrap-around bumpers remain straight and well aligned, complete with over riders and period 'Cibie' spot lamps.Along the sides, the famous Escort Sport twin decals run the full length of both flanks, perfectly complementing the Diamond White paintwork. The bonnet features the matching twin stripes, all of which remain crisp and well presented. This example is also fitted with door-mounted mirrors on both the driver and passenger sides, a desirable and practical period feature. At the rear, the Escort continues to impress with its full-width black bumper, which remains straight and well preserved. The original rear lamp units are in excellent condition and free from cracks, while the factory badging on the boot lid is still present and correctly positioned, maintaining the car’s authentic appearance, The boot lid foam/ rubber spoiler sits straight with only the very lightest of marks, Note not worthy of mentioningCompleting the exterior is a full set of original factory-stamped glass, further highlighting the car’s originality. Exterior rubbers to the sides, front and back are all in good condition without displaying cracks or tarnish which you will usually see on lesser modelsINTERNALOpen and step inside the driver’s or passenger’s front doors and you’re instantly transported back to the early 1980s a true nostalgic Escort cabin that captures the spirit of the era perfectly. This example still retains its original Cadiz striped fabric seats in Tan, and they present in very impressive condition throughout, both front and rear. The front seats, complete with their original factory headrests, remain firm and supportive with very little visible wear and no sagging. The rear seats are even more remarkable and appear virtually unused, presenting almost as new. When paired with the car’s moderate mileage it really highlights just how special and well-preserved this Escort is.Underfoot, the Tan interior carpeting remains in very good condition, having clearly benefited from protective over mats throughout its lifetime. This contrasts nicely with the matching tan door cards, which look superb both front and rear, still holding their colour and shape beautifully. The cabin layout is exactly as Ford intended simple, uncluttered and driver-focused. The Tan colour coded dashboard provides the perfect backdrop and proudly displays the ‘Sport’ emblem on the passenger side. Just alongside sits a circular heater vent, with the glovebox neatly positioned beneath.Moving to the centre of the dashboard, you’ll find the original heater controls operated by twin slider switches, along with a push-button two-speed interior fan control. Below these sits the period audio system, accompanied by the push-button hazard warning switch, the classic push-in cigarette lighter, and the wonderfully retro half-moon ashtray small details that instantly bring back the charm of the era.Directly ahead of the driver is the square instrument binnacle, laid out in typical Escort fashion. On the left sits the tachometer, centrally positioned are the temperature and fuel gauges, and to the right is the speedometer marked in kilometres. The display currently reads just over 56, 000 km, which equates to approximately 34800 miles, further reinforcing the car’s low mileage credentials. A matching round heater vent sits to the right-hand side of the dash to complete the balanced layout. The original Sport flat-faced three-spoke leatherette steering wheel remains in place and shows only light wear consistent with careful use over the years. Just below, the colour-coded centre console houses the four-speed gear lever, which presents very well, along with the period quartz clock.Altogether, the interior complements the exterior character of the car perfectly. It’s a wonderful reminder of how cars used to be simple, honest and refreshingly uncluttered. Step inside and you’re instantly taken back to the good old days, basic by modern standards perhaps but more than enough to capture the true spirit of the Escort SportENGINE & TRANSMISSIONUnder the bonnet you will find the robust in-line four cylinder 1598cc Overhead Valve four cylinder petrol engine which remains in standard form producing around 84bhp, With the automatic choke one 'press' of the pedal and instantly fires into lifeThe engine bay presents in immaculate condition along with pre determined informational stickers and notices throughout, Attention to detail has been maintained while ensuring originality preserved throughoutMated to a 4-speed Type E (rocket) Gearbox along with rear wheel drive ensured the 1600 Sport offers a good balance between acceleration and general every day driving, Drive take ups smooth throughout the range offering a leisurely Sunday drive or for the more discerning a brisk offering can be had when requiredWHEELS, TYRES & BRAKESSitting on original period correct alloy wheels all round, Presenting in the very best of condition being damage free and vibrant, All shod with correct fitting 175/ 70/ R13 Tyres which emit ample even treadFitted with solid front calliper disc brakes to the front and drums to the rear coupled to a hydraulically operated master cylinder which ensures you a brought to a smooth precise gradual haltHISTORY FILEThis time esk example first registered on the 01-01-1980, Originality has been preserved and quite simply a credit to previous ownership who without doubt have cherished itShowing original underneath with no signs of welding and being subject to a fresh re commissioning highlighting original panels and running gearPaintwork due to over zealous polishing throughout its life the decision was made to have the vehicle befitted with the full paint it deserves and the end result is quite simply stunning, Viewing recommended !!It's now one of those examples you can take to a show and your coming home with a trophy, runs and drives as you would expect, ready to use and be enjoyed.
