Seller's comments about 1928' Ford Model A

The Ford Model A had a short production run compared to the Model T that it replaced, but nearly five million of them were built between 1927 and 1932. Factories assembled them all across the USA, from New York to California, as well as in South America, Europe, Asia and South Africa.
Offered with a huge array of body styles, the Model A featured a 3285cc four-cylinder engine, three-speed non-synchromesh gearbox and four-wheel brakes. There was also a 2-litre variant built specially for the UK market.
The Model A was a ‘clean sheet of paper’ design – period sales literature described it as being all new ‘from radiator cap to rear axle’ – and it was an immediate sales success. It was also the first Ford to wear the famous blue-oval badge.
In more recent times, the instantly recognisable Model A has attracted a dedicated fanbase and a thriving network of specialists, while its simple, robust nature makes it ideal for endurance rallying.
Originally built in Canada in 1928, the Ford Model A being offered for sale here was exported new to Australia, and would stay there for the next 80 years.
In 1959, it was bought by David Harding – a young motor mechanic who was working in Ceduna in Southern Australia. It had been converted into a ute and Harding bought it for £15, then spent a couple of years driving it around the family farm.
After serving in Vietnam, Harding fully restored the Model A in the early 1970s, using a Tourer body that was acquired from a local farmer in return for two crates of beer. The chrome plating, meanwhile, was done in Adelaide – 1000km each way from Harding’s remote farm in Penong.
A charming hand-written letter from Harding is part of the car’s history file and documents his time with the Ford, which was acquired by the current UK-based owner in 2008 so that he could use it on the 2010 Peking to Paris Motor Challenge.
As part of the preparations, he fitted a replacement Model A engine that had been meticulously rebuilt by Belcher Engineering to standard specification, complete with original splash lubrication. An alternator was fitted, the rear axle was tested and rebuilt by BPA Engineering in Hampshire and the most hi tec addition was that of a Monit Trip Meter and the car then successfully completed the Peking to Paris after suffering nothing more serious than a broken spring after travelling all the way from Beijing across China, Mongolia, Uzbekistan, Iran, Turkey and on to a well-earned celebration at the finish in Paris.
A couple of years later, the Model A completed another gruelling long-distance rally – the South America Challenge – and since then it has been used on more local events. All it’s needed along the way has been standard maintenance and post-event checks.
Compared to many other cars of the same era, it’s very light and easy to drive, and will happily cruise at 50-55mph, while the three-speed gearbox is simple to use.
This Ford Model A has long since proved itself as simplicity rules on some of the most challenging endurance rallies in the world. It’s a strong, dependable vintageant that’s now ready to tackle its next adventure whether from Peking to Paris or back across the deserts of Mongolia once again!
