Seller's comments about 1950' Healey Silverstone

1950 Healey SilverstoneRegistration: HCJ 210Chassis: E76Engine: B4823First Registered: 19 May 1950Originally supplied in Green Chrome (metallic)Few post-war British sports cars capture the spirit of early competition quite like the Healey Silverstone. Designed with rallying and endurance events in mind, they were purposeful machines from the outset. Chassis E76, registration HCJ 210, is a particularly appealing example with well-documented ownership and genuine significant period competition history .The car’s history file is extensive and includes a charming reminder of its appearance at the Brooks auction during the Goodwood Festival of Speed in 1998. Long-term owners Mr and Mrs Cakebread were present in the Brooks marquee behind Goodwood House when the car was offered, and their reserved seat passes from the sale remain with the car today. Prior to that auction, the original Riley 2. 5-litre 'Big Four’ engine was rebuilt in 1987 by Holbay Racing Engines, including a balanced crankshaft and rods along with new pistons At this point the odometer was reset, and the car has covered just 6, 359 miles since the RebuildFollowing their purchase in 1998, the Cakebreads carried out further sympathetic work including brake refurbishment, the manufacture of new aluminium front wings, localised paint refreshment where required, and the fitment of a mohair hood, tonneau and side screens Competition HistoryHCJ 210 was used exactly as Donald Healey intended. Within days of delivery the car was entered in the Alpine Rally, beginning an active early competition career.Highlights include1950 – Alpine Rally (shortly after delivery)1951 – Alpine Rally – Joint 1st in Class and winner of a Coupe des Alpes1952 – Goodwood Nine Hours entrant alongside fellow Silverstones D48 and E711953 – Charterhall International, Alpine Rally, and the 6 Hour Relay atSilverstone1954 – LAC Morecambe RallyThe Coupe des Alpes, awarded in 1951, was particularly prized by drivers and their navigators, as it was only awarded to cars that finished this gruelling circa 2000 mile event with no penalty points at all. The Alpine Rally history is fully recorded, with photographs, in the book “Les Healeys Dans Les Alpes” by Herve Chevalier and the car also features in the “Profile” series about the Healey Silverstone (No 71).The car was originally campaigned by its first owner Edgar Wadsworth, who clearly made full use of the Silverstone’s capabilities.OwnershipWadsworth sold HCJ 210 in March 1954 to Mr Heyworth of J & J McLerie Ltd, Bacup, who retained the car for an impressive 18 years until 1972. Ownership then passed briefly toDr M. D. Brydson of Crewe, before being acquired by Patrick Betts, who kept the car untilit appeared at the Brooks Festival of Speed auction in 1998 where it was purchased by Mrand Mrs Cakebread,Healey Silverstone’s are always popular thanks to their versatility and strong event eligibility, HCJ210 stands out with its well-documented history and known story from new. The model is on the list of Mille Miglia eligible cars and having been awarded a Coupe des Alpes in 1951 must be in a very strong position to be awarded a place in this sought after event. There is also a rather pleasing personal connection to its earliest days. By coincidence, our own neighbour is the daughter-in-law of Edgar Wadsworth and widow of John Wadsworth, the former BMC works driver. A small world, and a reminder of how closely intertwined the historic motorsport community can be.
