1949 Humber Pullman MkII Limousine

Offered for sale is my rare 1949 Humber Pullman limousine. Coachwork by Thrupp & Maberly.
Many of these cars were owned by VIP’s eg. Churchill and the gentry back in the day.

This one has the original buff log book and the first owner was the 5th Baron Lord Harris of Kent. As part of his duties as Vice-Lieutenant of Kent he carried the Queen Mother in the car on several occasions. There is an old letter in his own hand to this effect. I also have details of his life and his stately home in Kent which is open to the public to this day.

A very spacious vehicle with a glass partitioned chauffeur’s compartment. In the back the occupants sit in luxury surrounded by wood, leather and West of England cloth, with a rear window privacy blind. It has vast legroom, armrests and the original deep pile carpet. There are also two folding occasional seats and the vehicle will seat a maximum of 9. An enormous boot is also very useful.

Ex-private museum, prior to my ownership it spent 30 years in dry storage. I purchased it in a distressed state, very dirty and with some missing parts but the bodywork appeared to be in remarkable overall condition.

For this reason I decided to recommission rather than restore. It was in very good condition structurally and I found no evidence of any welding underneath. The paintwork is very old and has scratches and chips but it polished up nicely and has a wonderful patina. Its certainly had a very favourable reaction from fellow enthusiasts and the public in my ownership.

As mentioned the car was missing a number of parts and these have been meticulously tracked down and reinstated using original parts wherever possible. I can provide details if required. The car is now complete and roadworthy.

The car when purchased had no V5C despite the presence of the original log book. After several months of negotiations with the DVLA it now has one and retains its original number plate and indeed the original Bluemels cast aluminium digits. The plate should even be transferable but that would be a shame for such an original car.

The 4. 1L side valve straight six engine was found to be free turning and started up when all fluids etc. had been changed, so has not been touched internally. It has a surprising amount of performance for such a large and heavy car! The column shift 4 speed manual gearbox is in good order too.

A new exhaust was fabricated from scratch with tubing in stainless steel. Its very quiet as befits a limousine!
The ignition system is all new, at the same time it was converted to negative earth and a disguised alternator. (Original dynamo included)

All other electrical systems were returned to full working condition including the semaphore indicators and very rare optional heating system.
The latter was amazingly advanced for its day and took a good deal of restoration work. It has three independently fan controllable outlets, one for the chauffeur compartment with demister and separate left and right for the rear. As original it features red lights that glow brighter as the heater output increases!

The brake system was overhauled, and the fuel pump is new E10 fuel compatible.
The interior is largely original except for the front seat which was recovered in leather. The boot has new wood lining. The chromework is in remarkably good original condition with the sole exception of the hubcaps.

Located 5 mins from J27 M4 motorway.
