3 Owner, 1979 International Scout II

The original owner of this Scout II purchased her new in eastern PA and used her as a farm truck, hauling supplies and plowing the driveway. It was sold on in the 90's to a fellow who had property in ME and the Scout was brought there. It was used as a summer runabout and also to clear the drive for any winter trips. Through all of this time, she was garage/barn kept, not stored outside. A couple of years ago, the Scout was then purchased by a family in CT and the Scout was driven from Maine to CT. The idea was that the CT family was going to have her restored and was going to use her to tow a vintage Shasta trailer as part of their mobile bar business. They spent roughly $1000 on several different parts and another $8000 having all the floors replaced with steel and coated in Rhino Lining.

As they started pricing out a full restoration (all the body work, paint, possible engine work, etc.) they found out it would not be fiscally responsible of their business funds, so the decision has been made to sell her and find one that is ready to go. Very probably a Scout II as the lady who owns her grew up around Scouts, her family using Scouts as daily drivers and farm trucks around their property for as long as she can remember.

This Scout is in pretty good condition. As mentioned the floors have been replaced and some brake lines and fuel lines replaced. The battery is stone cold dead and in my time with her charging off my car battery, she was still clicking and only just turning the engine. She does start and run though and drives well too. The lady's mechanic told her it wouldn't be a bad idea to replace the alternator and the battery.. and possibly the fuel tank and rebuild the carb. However, the fuel filter doesn't appear to be full of any detritus, so the tank may be ok.

This Scout's biggest foible is the rust along the lower body lines. The rockers were replaced when the floors were completed, but the lower sections of each front fender and the rear rockers will need work, replacement or patch at minimum. Very straight forward for someone with the time and skill set. We know she was repainted at some point, her original Mint Green can be seen in some areas. The mileage on her is 97,500.

From the factory, she came equipped with the IH/AMC 304 V8 ( delivering 122 hp and 225 lb ft of torque) power steering, power brakes (discs up front and drums in the back), open RA18 Dana 44 axles front and rear, Chrysler 727 3 speed automatic transmission, connecting power to both axles via a Dana 20 transfer case. The current wheel and tire combo are white wagon wheels and Goodyear Wrangler A/Ts in 235/75/15, which are only about 8 years old, in good condition and a lot of healthy tread left.

As previously mentioned, she runs and drives and as is, could still be a fun summer, top off runabout. The lights work, the wipers, heat and the blinkers (right rear isn't blinking though) are all operational as is the Myers plow set up (there is no plow with the truck as the owners were going to remove the frame set up).

On the interior, the seats are in good condition with only a small tear in the driver side bench. The dash is crack free and the gauges all operate correctly. The door cards are a bit tatty. The driver window goes up and down but not with the crank. A new mechanism comes with the truck, other windows work correctly.

The chassis is solid, running gear, springs, etc. The frame has some scale rust/surface rust but no rot, no holes that aren't supposed to be there.

Overall, a very solid basis for a restoration if someone wants to go that route. A great drivable restoration, enjoy her while fixing the issues; or simply clean her up a bit more, get her running reliably (new battery, alternator, carb rebuild) and drive her around for ice cream, cruise nights, Cars n Coffee; or lastly, take her out for some light duty 4 wheeling.
