1969 Jaguar 420G 4. 2 Manual with Overdrive. Supplied new on 1 September 1969, this exceptional Jaguar 420G was delivered in the distinctive and highly evocative combination of Tyrolean Green with St. James Red hide and matching road wheels. It stands today as one of the most original and historically significant surviving examples of Jaguar’s ultimate large sporting saloon of the pre XJ era.Model OverviewIntroduced in 1966 as the final and most developed evolution of the Mark X platform, the 420G represented Jaguar’s definitive luxury flagship prior to the arrival of the XJ6. Powered by the 4. 2 litre twin cam XK engine and equipped with independent rear suspension, it combined limousine scale with genuine dynamic sophistication.Standard specification included power assisted steering, electric windows and a spacious interior finished in Connolly hide and polished walnut veneers. While most examples were delivered with the Borg Warner automatic transmission, this car was ordered new with the rare four speed manual gearbox and overdrive.In manual configuration, the 420G becomes a notably more engaging driver’s car. The XK engine’s flexibility is fully realised, performance is more immediate and the overall character shifts from formal conveyance to true sporting saloon, capable of brisk and rewarding cross country motoring.Of the 5, 429 right hand drive cars produced, only very few remain registered with the DVLA today. As a keen concours competitor, he was known for presenting his cars to exacting standards, combining originality with meticulous detailing. His Jaguars were frequently displayed publicly and were regarded as benchmark examples within enthusiast circles.Among his cars were some of the most historically important competition Jaguars ever constructed, including the final production C Type, the ex Jim Clark D Type and the ex Peter Sutcliffe Lightweight E Type, alongside an XK SS and other significant models. Such was the importance of his collection that it merited a dedicated chapter in The Private Motor Car Collections Of Great Britain by Peter Hugo, a publication chronicling the country’s most distinguished private motor car collections.Uniquely, every Jaguar in his ownership was finished in Tyrolean Green with St. James Red interior, creating a distinctive and instantly recognisable personal signature. This 420G formed part of that remarkable ensemble and remained in his custodianship until 1988. He described it as the finest Jaguar saloon ever produced, a statement of particular significance given the calibre of the cars he owned and exhibited.Condition and PreservationFrom new, this example was treated with the Ziebart rust proofing system, then regarded as the leading corrosion protection process available. The car remains in remarkable unrestored condition, retaining all original body panels with excellent panel fit and factory original undersides. There are no corrosion concerns whatsoever.The paintwork presents in excellent order and the interior remains beautifully preserved, retaining its original seats and carpets in outstanding condition. The recorded mileage of just 58, 000 miles from new is supported by MOT certificates dating back to 1973, reinforcing the authenticity of the odometer reading.Mechanically, the car has recently benefited from a comprehensive full brake and suspension overhaul. The manual gearbox operates precisely and, combined with overdrive, delivers relaxed high speed touring fully befitting a grand Jaguar saloon.DocumentationThe vehicle is accompanied by a copy of its original buff log book, extensive correspondence and history file, invoices, original handbook in pouch, dealer details, lubrication chart and complete tool kit.
