Seller's comments about 1969' Land Rover Series II

For sale, through JOHN BROWN 4X4 LTD, Land Rover® Series 2a in Deep Bronze Green (1969).
Petrol 2286cc. MOT & Tax Exempt. Parabolic Springs. Heater. Overdrive. Free Wheeling Hubs. Dixon Bate Towbar with Electrics. Weber Carburettor. Front Lifting Eyes. Kenlowe Electric Fan. Collected by us and driven into our premises 30 miles down the motorway.
It is not often that we have the opportunity to buy a car locally and collect it in person – but this is a prime example of just that – it was collected from a nearby town and driven back to the premises by John Brown Sr himself!
This is not done without quite some considerable thought…. driving unknown vehicles at motorway speeds is somewhat of a gamble and therefore, a route was planned avoiding motorways and excessive speed. A support vehicle accompanied us in case there was the need for towing. It was not required. What did happen was that the vehicle turned out to be an absolute peach and it was immediately clear that it was completely roadworthy and ready for any challenge. This was probably due to the fact that we purchased the vehicle from a garage owner, who had owned the vehicle for some time and had the opportunity to carry out the varied tinkerings required so that it was ready to use.
On arrival at the premises where the vehicle was stored, it was very clear that this was a “good” Series 2a – a nice straight body with pleasing patina… a super strong chassis… and to cap it all off, it started first turn. The owner demanded that we test drive it prior to purchase as he claimed that the vehicle would surprise us at “how well it drove” and indeed, he was right…. the 2a pulled just as it should, with quiet overdrive, sharp brakes and direct steering.
The deal was done and the vehicle was driven back to our premises, but not down the planned back road route as it felt so good to drive and we were so busy that day, we elected to hit the motorway – it cruised between 65-70mph with the overdrive engaged, for the whole journey and we were back at site within 30 minutes, with no dramas at all to report.
It was therefore decided that this Land Rover® would be put through the usual mechanical inspection schedule that we perform on every vehicle that we sell, but other than that, the vehicle would be left as a hard top with van sides, with road biased tyres and overdrive fitted. Incidentally this Series 2a also enjoys parabolic springs which give a really nice ride quality we don’t normally see on a 2a. We have a term for cars like this – we call them “Whitby Cars” – this is because, when we are out on test, if a Land Rover® feels just right and gives you the impression it wants to be driven further, for example to Whitby, we refer to them as such. Interestingly, when we looked at the paperwork, we noticed that this vehicle has been driven many, many thousands of miles over the course of the previous 20 years of MOTs. This is quite unusual, as generally people travel short distances over time in them. Perhaps, due to the way that this drives, it has encouraged people to use it more and we see this as a real positive. Vehicles which are used frequently tend to be nicer to drive, and indeed be more reliable in the long run.
So who would this hard top 2a suit? Firstly, with a really great chassis and bulkhead, whoever purchases this could keep it as is for another 50 years without fear of entering an expensive rebuild process, so it would be ideal for someone who is looking to keep a Land Rover® long term or pass it down through the family. Then, there is the driving prowess – with the overdrive, free wheeling hubs for better economy and parabolic springs for a better ride, along with the general driving standard, this 2a would suit someone who actually wants to use it more than a trip down the local pub on a weekend. Perhaps you live in an area where there are more A Roads or Dual Carriageways – then this is much more capable of keeping up with modern traffic than a standard Series 2a (which would generally be rated at 45-50mph).
Then, there is the configuration to consider…. currently, the vehicle is set up as a hard top with van sides and this is ideal for people with bikes, pets, tools or indeed a classic business that wants the van sides so it can be sign written and used for work. Of course, if you like the sound of this vehicle but want to transport the family, side windows and rear benches for an extra four passengers can be fitted at a reasonably small extra cost. Conversely, if a soft top is what you are looking for, then we can convert this for you too, at a pre-fixed quote of £2995.
There is a large file of receipts and old MOTs that accompany this old girl, showing that she has been well maintained and well used over the course of the last two decades.
As we have not needed to invest heavily in bringing this vehicle to market, we are able to offer it for general sale at a price point not normally found or realistically achievable through us. We therefore want to make it clear that the price point is not low because the vehicle is in a poor state, but that it can be sold at a very reasonable price, with our major mechanical warranty, so we can still achieve the margin required to prepare and sell the vehicle.
In summary, if you are looking for a Land Rover® Series 2a Hard Top that you intend to keep longer term and want to actually use on a more regular basis, then this superb old girl is well worth consideration, particularly at this price point, which we do not expect to be able to achieve any time soon.
