Seller's comments about 1971' Land Rover Series III

For sale, through JOHN BROWN 4X4 LTD, Land Rover® Series 3 Ragtop in Mid Grey (1971).
Petrol 2286cc. MOT & Tax Exempt. Michelin 750R16 Tyres. Height Adjustable Tow Bar & Electrics. Free Wheeling Hubs. Rear Mud Flaps. Recent Bumper. Recent Canvas. Deluxe Interior. 12v Charging Socket. Spare Set of Keys. Only 4 keepers from new. Good History file of receipts which includes the factory build sheet. The 703rd Series 3 Land Rover® ever built, registered on 4th November 1971! Owned by the previous keeper for 38 years of its life – since 1986.
Here we have for sale a very early 1971 Land Rover® Series 3, presented in Mid Grey colour scheme with sand canvas & white wheels – it is very unusual, even for us, to see a Series 3 within the first 1000 built. There is a strong folder of receipts with this truck which includes the original “factory floor” build sheet – with the options ordered laid out with the VIN at the bottom – these included door mounted wing mirrors, electric washers rather than push to wash (luxury, later became standard), rear reflectors, steering column lock, fresh air heater, etc etc – which is good provenance for a new keeper. Interestingly, though it was ordered as a hard top originally, reference is made on the sheet to a soft top too – likely as the original owner wanted both for summer and winter months. They even went as far as specifying AVON tyres over other brands – as they were known to be the best variant available at the time of build.
Externally, in light of the above, we have decided to keep it close to this original document – so what you see is pretty much exactly as it was ordered – which included the new keeper spec’ing a clean razor edge bonnet from new, rather than the more bulbous later type, and requesting no bonnet mounted spare be fitted. There are lots of nice period features present – a height adjustable tow bar with electrics, rear mud flaps and grab handles, a recent bumper & canvas to give a clean look, original white wheels with 750R16 Michelin cross-climate tyres, vintage number plates, door mounted mirrors, etc etc. We think the original owner did a great job and in light of the fact it has only had 4 keepers since 1971 and that current keeper had owned it since 1986 prior to selling to us, we think the sympathetic approach was the right one to take – and I am sure a new owner who values such history will agree.
On the inside, there is a set of 3 front deluxe seats, along with deluxe matting to the footwells, which affords seating for three people. A 12v socket has been fitted to allow charging of mobile phones and sat nav systems etc… it works too. It has a very standard feel, which we like… often some keepers can get carried away with adding lots of extras which do not improve the experience inside – and it is nice to note that hasn’t happened here. The rear is unfitted with the exception of a load mat to the floor area – but could house bench seats on request for £595 to bring seating to seven people including the driver, if so desired. 2 sets of keys are supplied – the second set is almost always missing – so that is a nice touch too.
Out on the road, this Series 3 gives a pleasing period drive, aided by larger 750 Michelin tyres for a more relaxed cruise, and free wheeling hubs to limit axle wear and improve fuel economy. It also stops just as it should, too. On our test drive route, we became very fond of this Series 3 – a real reminder of the original product, and ideal for those looking for the authentic Series experience.
In summary then, if you are looking for an early Series 3 Land Rover® with good provenance, then this could be for you. With the added benefits of a deluxe interior, seating for three in the front whilst lugging loads or animals in the back, and MOT & Tax exemption with classic insurance, this would be ideal for a customer who is looking to enjoy the original Series experience to the maximum.
