Although outwardly similar to the highly successful Lotus Eleven, the 15 was distinctly different in several respects. Most significantly it was designed to accept larger capacity engines than its predecessor and was also the first Lotus sports racer to have fully independent rear suspension. Series 1, 2 and 3 Type 15s were produced and scored many notable successes in the UK, whilst also competing at Le Mans. Despite this a total of only 27 cars were produced between 1958 and 1960.
One of the cars that raced in period had a modified Alfa engine bored to 1500cc and a 5-speed gearbox installed in a modified Series 1 chassis. This inspired the owner of this car to create a stunning homage to this very rare Lotus in a build that involved several leading specialists. The result is a new copy of a period car, which has driven only 75 miles since completion.
The 15 was built to a very high standard using traditional methods with all parts either new or reconditioned. It was based on a new Ken Nicholls chassis with bespoke hand-formed aluminium panels by Geoff Moss of MPH panels. The 1750cc Alfa engine and five speed gearbox were rebuilt by marque specialists Bob Dove Motorsport and set up/ run in on a dyno. A detailed photographic and descriptive record was maintained for the build and accompanies the car. The build costs and subsequent specialist valuations significantly exceed the owner?s asking price.
Externally indistinguishable to the real thing, the 15 is invigorating to drive and has the added advantage of being road registered. An ideal opportunity to enjoy a unique car as it is or use as a basis of an HTP replica of the real thing.
