"The 280SL is the grand total of everything Mercedes-Benz engineers have learned about high-performance sporting machinery" - Road & Track magazine 1969
This example on offer is the most sought-after version of the iconic Mercedes-Benz Pagoda series: the 280SL with the extremely rare ZF5 gearbox. This car was shipped in the summer of '69 to its first Lebanese owner (i. e. "European" version), at the time a thriving centre of style, art and free thinking. This rare 280SL was appropriately delivered in the equally exclusive Sandy beige metallic, black hardtop and black mbtex. The pièce de résistance is of course the optional and at the time very expensive ($500) ZF five-speed manual gearbox, which was always delivered in combination with the extended rear suspension.
It goes without saying that this 280SL is in perfect running condition: the engine runs smoothly and the gearbox shifts smoothly and directly. The interior is largely original and the car has only been repainted once. Apart from a few visual defects, this 280SL is technically in excellent condition, as it were a real drivers car. Furthermore, the car is rust free, fully functional and ready to hit the road. This car can be used perfectly as-is and without additional costs and is therefore ready for many worry-free miles. In addition, given the very high market prices for the 280SL Pagoda's with original ZF5 gearbox, this 280SL is a perfect candidate for a nuts & bolts restoration to concours condition.
This very rare and most wanted Pagode is now for sale at Rock 'N Roll Classics!
