Seller's comments about 1968' Mercedes-Benz 280 Sl

The Mercedes-Benz W113 'Pagoda' Sports was introduced at the 1963 Geneva Motor Show and replaced both the 300 SL (W198) and the 190 SL (W121).
It was produced between 1963 and 1971 and a total of 48, 912 cars were built before it was replaced by the W107 series SL's in 1971.
The car was developed under the auspices of Mercedes-Benz Technical Director Fritz Nallinger, Chief Engineer Rudolf Uhlenhaut and Head of Styling Friedrich Geiger. The lead designers were Paul Bracq and Béla Barényi, who created its patented and slightly concave hardtop, which inspired the "Pagoda" nickname.
All models were equipped with an inline-six cylinder engine with multi-port mechanical fuel injection with the first cars having a 2. 3 Litre engine followed by a 2. 5 litre for one year only in 1967 and finally the 2. 8 litre engine was installed in 1968 and continued through to the end of production in 1971. The bonnet, boot lid, door skins and hood cover were all made of aluminium to reduce weight and the comparatively short and wide chassis, combined with an excellent suspension, powerful brakes and radial tyres gave the W113 superb handling for its time.
The styling of the front, with its characteristic upright Bosch "fishbowl" headlights and simple chrome grille, dominated by the large three-pointed star in the nose panel, paid homage to the earlier 300 SL roadster.
Nearly all models were 2-seater cars and were produced with a fold-away Soft-Top and an optional removable Hardtop, but a 2+2 version was introduced with the introduction of the 250 SL in 1967 and this was referred to as the "California Coupe," which had a fold-down rear bench seat instead of the soft-top and only came with a removable Hard Top. It was so named because most of these models were only sold in sunny California!
This beautiful Mercedes 280SL Pagoda Sports - Chassis No: WDBthe details below and Engine No: the details below is a 'Matching Numbers' car and was first registered on 15th May 1968 and is finished in its original colour of Medium Blue with a Blue Mohair Soft Top, factory body-coloured Hard Top and it has recently been fitted with a new Blue Leather interior in readiness for sale.
We are not sure where this car started life and are waiting to obtain details from Mercedes Benz Classic archives department, but we do know that the car found its way to South Africa in 1984 and was owned by a Mr S L Frankel of Sandton, Johannesburg where it remained in his ownership before being sold to a J McCarthy here in the UK and he imported the car back in the summer of 1999 and it was re-registered here on 27th October 1999 with the number plate MUF 718F and with 18, 688 miles showing on the speedometer. This most probably means the car had covered 118, 688 miles from new, but without any early history, we cannot confirm this.
The car was sold to Classic Car dealer Chelsea Cars in Wandsworth and they sold the car to a Mr Robert Payton from Ealing in West London on 2nd August 2000. He kept the car for 4 years and we sold it for him to the current owner of 19 years in May 2004 with mileage at 24, 778 miles.
Due to the owner living and working in Singapore, it has spent most of the last 13 years in secure storage and was only taken out and driven when he came back to the UK on holiday 3/ 4 times a year. It was given a new MOT on 28th April prior to being delivered to ourselves, and the recorded mileage is now 44, 692, so he has driven 19, 918 miles in 19 years, averaging just over 1, 000 miles per year, but only 1, 389 miles since 2010!
The history file contains 22 invoices from Classic Mercedes specialist Steve Redfearn in Wimbledon dating from February 2000 right through to the last one in 2010, and one from Mercedes specialist Colin Ferns in Richmond in 2010 with a total of over £15, 500 having been spent on various repairs and new parts.
The car has also just had a brand new interior including new leather seat covers and carpets and it looks stunning inside.
It also really nice to drive with an excellent engine and gearbox and represents excellent value at this price..
This is a very reluctant sale and the owner is only selling because he is moving to Dubai and just doesn't come back to the UK enough to use it.
Upon sale the car will be given a pre-sales service and it will come with our own 6 Month Mechanical Warranty which can be upgraded and extended at additional cost if required.
It is also Road Tax Free, MOT exempt and ULEZ compliant!
