Seller's comments about 1971' MINI Classic

January 1971. Under the British Leyland era, one of the very first Morris Mini 1275 GT of this generation is born! The Morris badge deserves a moment's attention, because it says something about the era. When British Leyland took control of the British marques at the turn of the 70s, it ran its production lines in parallel, badgeing the same cars Austin or Morris depending on the line. Mechanically, the fundamentals are shared. But the badge, it bears an era-specific signature that enthusiasts recognise immediately and that discerning collectors search for with patience. The 1275 GT, when it arrived on the market, sparked debate. Some purists criticised it for breaking with the round, organic lines of the historic Mini: a more angular snout, a black grille, a silhouette that betrayed the influence of 70s design on a body born ten years earlier.British Leyland wanted a Mini that was of the moment, sufficiently differentiated to justify its own commercial identity, and modern enough to entice a new generation of buyers.Time largely proved them right.Today, the 1275 GT is unanimously recognised as one of the most desirable Minis of the entire British Leyland era, driven by its 1275 cc engine, by its Remote gear lever mounted on a round tunnel which the very early examples benefited from, and by its original hydrolastic suspension which gives it that distinctive, supple yet communicative handling.Mechanically, the 1275 GT does not pretend to be a Cooper S, and that is precisely where part of its charm lies. It develops slightly less power, but it carries with it a smoothness of operation and reliability that make it a very pleasant car.Under the bonnet, everything is coherent with the rest of the car. It is immediately evident that this car has been restored with the same care as given to every other square centimetre of the bodywork.Because this 1275 GT has been completely rebuilt from bare shell, without exception or compromise. Everything has been dismantled, every sheet of metal inspected with a rigidity that admits no compromise, the areas that needed it cut and rewelded with a precision that only craftsmen who truly love what they do can achieve, and the whole was rebuilt in strict adherence to the original configuration.Fifty years after its birth, it presents itself in a state that commands respect and admiration, and bears witness to what a workshop can achieve when it refuses to compromise on standards. The Antelope Beige body colour paired with the black roof forms a combination of rare elegance on a Mini of this generation. On board, the interior is in a truly remarkable state, flawless and without a single wrong note. The black upholstery is superb in its finish, the triple-dashboard Smiths instrument binnacle is perfectly in place with its speedometer, tachometer and the combined fuel-temperature gauge. The toggle switches, the dashboard, the gear lever on its round tunnel characteristic of the early 1275 GTs, all exude an authenticity that rushed reconstructions never quite manage to capture.A rare and remarkable car, which will delight any lover of beautiful Minis. A true collector, not common!
