Seller's comments about 1953' Studebaker Commander Deluxe Starlight Coupe
1953 Studebaker Commander deluxe Starlight coupe
Not much deep history is known on this beautiful Starlight Coupe. We do know that the owner previous to this current owner had her for roughly 30 years and about 15 years ago (give or take), the car was pulled apart and restored/repainted. Many of the original parts were cleaned up, repainted, re-used. This wasn't a nut and bolt, concours restoration. At that time a non-original 232 engine was built and installed. (the original engine and heads are included with the car). The mileage on the odometer, 3478, is believed to be the correct, current mileage.
The car was driven very little after the restoration, staying in a garage.
About 7+ years ago, the car was purchased by the current owner and brought up to CT. Being and avid fan of orphan brand cars, this stylish coupe fit right in with the rest of his collection.
However, as his collection has grown and different cars have come along, this Starlight Coupe has faded into the background and in the last couple of years, hasn't really been driven except for a quick haunt into town or around the property. In terms of mechanical work, the generator was rebuilt by the current owner.
He's decided to move her on to a new home.
Aside from the repaint, some rust in the trunk floor was taken care of, new fuel and brake lines done and the upholstery on the seats was done as well. It is not Studebaker correct but it is period correct.
The car is rust free, starts easily and drives very nicely, with everything except the radio working as it should. The "power antenna" works too... It's hand powered, by a knob on the driver kick panel.
The tires are BFGoodrich Silvertown replicas made by Coker and installed about 5 years ago by the current owner.
The 232 puts out roughly 120 HP and 190 lb ft of torque and is sent to the rear end through a 2 speed automatic transmission. The 232 will take about 15 seconds to get you up to 60 MPH and she'll cruise all day there. When you need to stop, the 4 drums do the work with as much force as you can generate, these are not power brakes, nor is the steering. As a matter of fact, nothing power on the car, everything in manual. BTW, the car does not have dual exhaust, one tip is false tip, as the two tips look better than one.
The Starlight Coupe is one the more "rare" of the Commanders, this being one of just 6106 examples made (there were about 76,000 Commanders produced in 1953.
Despite having only 3400 miles, she does have a couple of blemishes that can be seen in the photos. A couple on the paint, the passenger door glass has a crack , the chrome is very good but not perfect, same with the window trim.
Overall, this is a very solid, show worthy car that sits smack in the middle of being a #2 and #3 car. Drives great and is totally turn key ready to enjoy.
Asking price is $21,500
