EXTERIOR
This wonderful Microbus began life as an Australian Army bus and was sourced in its original Khaki Green from a dry state and specifically chosen for its superb structural condition. An expensive professional restoration now sees this bus presented in Volkswagen Alpine White over Birch Green. The paintwork boasts a stunning shine with uniform finish, a real eye catcher. The body panels are straight and in excellent condition. The painted bumpers are in superb order and all glass, lights and trim fully intact with just some light pitting to the driver’s door handle. The preserved underside and body have benefitted from a professional coating of preservative and cavity wax injection, a process not to be confused with amateurish undersealing. Having spent the majority of its life in a dry climate with salt free roads, this delightful bus is preserved in superb order.
INTERIOR
An ingenious and hugely practical interior is revealed upon opening the wide front 90-degree cab doors and huge slide loading door. The neatly designed and well thought out passenger compartment will comfortably seat 6 occupants with masses of leg and head room, whilst leaving the large roof high luggage compartment unimpeded. The cabin space offers space for three further occupants making this a hugely versatile 9-seater with seat belts. The seats, door cards, side panels and matching spare wheel cover are trimmed in original Dark Brown Leatherette PVC, (Code 68), which remains in very good order with no rips or damage. The factory build plates remain affixed to the driver’s door shut. The handsome head liner is clean and has a handful of very small holes/ slits and the safety padded rear cab wall has some wear. All controls and functions operate well. With plenty of room for friends and family, this is the ultimate recreational classic or basis for a camper conversion.
ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
The 2. 0 Type 4 engine as fitted to this example is perfectly suited to the T2 and is highly regarded for its impressive capabilities. The engine fires into life effortlessly and motorway cruising is surprisingly refined and far superior compared to smaller engine models. A vast program of modifications and improvements include, amongst many others; a full engine rebuild by Laurie Pettitt, a well-known engine specialist within VW circles, custom stainless-steel exhaust, 123 ignition with electronic distributor and Twin 40 IDF Weber carburettors. The engine performance is superb with a surprising turn of speed and produces approximately 110bhp! The electric power steering conversion is a vast improvement. The clean engine bay reveals no leaks and even has the original Australian military maintenance tags attached to the inside of the engine lid. The fully synchronized 4-speed gearbox operates very well with upgraded Vintage Speed Classic Spot gearshift.
WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
Stunning Porsche Fuchs style alloys wheels are virtually unmarked aside from one light abrasion to one spoke on the nearside rear wheel. Matching premium brand Bridgestone Duravis 185/ 65 R15 show plenty of tread. A dual hydraulic brake system operating front discs operate exactly as Volkswagen intended.
HISTORY FILE
This 1977 example was registered in Australia and used as an army bus. In 2002 the vehicle came to the UK and has had just two owners since, the previous having bought it in 2007. The name “Eddie” was soon affectionately given to the bus due to the number plate prefix EDE. Eddie has been part of the family for 16 years and has excelled in duties such as a holiday wagon and even called into action for several prom chariot requirements! A huge history file contains evidence of vast expenditure and details of the modifications to make this a real usable bus. The most recent service was carried out in May 2023. The conscientious owner has written a useful guide and notes to assist the next custodian enjoy ownership immediately with accompanying photos too.
A hugely emotional sale has been described by the previous owner as the right time with the children grown up and Eddie is being used less and less. “Chapter closed for us, but a new one commencing for someone else’s enjoyment”.
