History:The V8-BMW Type 502 was known in the 1950s as the king of the motorways. With this car BMW built its first V8 engine, which was among the world's first large-volume aluminium engines. After financial difficulties were overcome, the new BMW model was unveiled to the public for the first time at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1954: the BMW 502. It was the first German eight-cylinder car after the war, and the engine itself was the world's first eight-cylinder drive manufactured in large volumes from cast aluminium. The body, chassis and transmission were unchanged from the six-cylinder 501 model. This meant that the 502 also had a transmission independent of the engine block, which further improved the smooth, silky running characteristics of the V8 engine, which in no way lagged behind the American eight-cylinders. This barn find offers a unique opportunity. According to our information, this 2600 L was imported to Switzerland in 1962 as one of the last models and was first registered on 11 June 1975 to a pharmacist from the canton of Bern. This man was connected to the current owner family in eastern Switzerland, which hardly drove the car.Bodywork and paintwork:On 15 June 2025 we were commissioned to lift the car from its slumber in a wine village on the Rhine into freedom. Under its dusty exterior skin the Baroque angel appears in good condition and in very well-preserved and fully original form. The body is rust-free and in surprisingly good condition.Interior:The interior is enormously beautiful and it hardly shows that it is an original over 60 years old. The wood of the dashboard and the trims are well cared for and undamaged. The large sunroof works perfectly, although its sealing was not tested in favour of the wonderful dust layer.Engine and mechanics:The entire technology is in good condition but must be checked and overhauled for a fresh MOT after a long period of inactivity. The engine runs flawlessly, the oil pressure is very good and the gearbox shifts perfectly.Chassis:The suspension, damping and brakes should be checked, the brake pads replaced and the entire underbody cleaned and preserved.Driving experience:The king of the motorways rightly bears its title. The 502 drives as smoothly as silk and loves fast roads as well as the motorway. This magnificent saloon reliably takes five people to their destination with great comfort, even on long journeys.Recommendation:Baroque angels are no longer easy to find, since the cost of restoring such a car usually exceeds its value. V8 models have become scarce, and examples with the original sunroof are truly very rare. This barn find looks forward to its revival in the hands of a connoisseur.CAUTION: The stated sale price in pounds is for guidance only. Please send price inquiries to using the button below
