Seller's comments about 1984' Jaguar XJS

This lot will be auctioned via Iconic Auctioneers, The Iconic Sale at the BRDC Classic 2026 - Collectors' Cars on Saturday the 25th of July, The Wing, Silverstone Circuit, NN12 8TN. The XJ13 occupies a unique place in Jaguar’s history. Conceived in the mid-1960s as Jaguar’s long-awaited return to Le Mans, it was intended to revive the dominance established by the C-Type and D-Type in the previous decade. Designed under Malcolm Sayer’s direction, the XJ13 adopted a mid-engined layout and advanced aerodynamics, pairing a lightweight monocoque structure with Jaguar’s all-new V12 engine. Although testing in period demonstrated considerable speed potential, the project was ultimately shelved before ever competing, and the sole completed prototype remains part of the Jaguar Daimler Heritage collection. Its legacy, however, has made it one of the most revered and visually striking competition cars ever conceived. This extraordinary re-creation was completed in 2019 following an extensive seven and a half year build programme by TWR Replicas, led by Trevor Williams, a specialist in Jaguar-based engineering projects. Constructed around a 1984 Jaguar XJS donor chassis, the project was undertaken with the aim of capturing both the appearance and the mechanical character of the original concept while introducing modern reliability and usability where appropriate. The aluminium bodywork was hand formed and finished by Shapecraft, faithfully replicating the sculpted lines and riveted detailing of the original design. At its heart lies a rebuilt 6. 0-litre Jaguar V12 producing approximately 360bhp, managed via electronic fuel injection with a Syvec S8 ECU, coil-on-plug ignition and assisted cold start functionality. The engine is paired with a custom billet flywheel and Audi RS4 clutch assembly, driving through an Audi 01E six-speed manual gearbox fitted with uprated carbon synchros. Power is delivered to the rear wheels via a Quaife limited slip differential and competition specification driveshafts. The chassis utilises a steel monocoque centre section with fabricated front and rear subframes, supporting a pushrod suspension system damped by Öhlins TTX adjustable dampers. Braking is provided by a fully adjustable system incorporating Jaguar calipers, vented and drilled discs, and a bias adjustable pedal box with servo assistance. The specification reflects a deliberate focus on usability and endurance as well as performance, with cooling provided by a large capacity aluminium radiator, SPAL cooling fans and a fully stainless exhaust system wrapped in titanium heat shielding. The aluminium bodywork is detailed in period correct fashion, with functional rear clamshell access designed for serviceability and Plexiglas glazing used throughout. Inside, the cabin is trimmed in black leather and fitted with Sabelt FIA specification harnesses, while the original style instruments have been converted for electronic operation. The overall presentation remains faithful to the aesthetic intent of the original XJ13, combining motorsport function with striking visual purity.Completed to an exceptionally high standard and accompanied by a comprehensive photographic record of the build alongside extensive invoices totalling in excess of £380, 000, this re-creation has effectively been described as 'brand new' throughout. It offers a rare opportunity to experience one of the most iconic Jaguar silhouettes ever created, brought to life with a level of engineering depth and execution rarely seen in continuation or homage builds.A dramatic and technically accomplished interpretation of Jaguar’s most famous unrealised racing project, this TWR-built XJ13 stands as a highly usable and fully developed expression of a legend that, in period, never had the chance to compete.
