It is, with great pleasure, that we present for sale this numbers matching, right hand drive, manual with overdrive, Jaguar XK150. Finished in its original colour of Old English White with Red leather interior, on its original number plate, with just 3 previous UK owners and an advisory free MOT. This is the more desirable SE model that came with twin exhausts, wire wheels, 4 wheel disc brakes and the more powerful Blue Top 210BHP engine.
As with most cars that are approaching their 65th birthday, our XK has lived a life, however, unlike a lot, ours is almost fully documented, so, grab a cuppa and we will tell you all about our Jaguars life!
History
Our XK150 was built on the 14th of August 1958. It left the Coventry factory on the 19th of November bound for Henlys of London, the original distributor. It was then off to A J Beal of Exeter where Mr HC Sanderson of Torquay became its first custodian on the 16th of March 1959.
From there it appears that it was owned by Wing Commander Graham Rogers MBE DFC, a pilot in the RAF’s 92nd squadron. In 1972 Wing Commander Rogers had the car refurbished, this is immortalised by a brass plaque on the glovebox lid, stating the date, mileage and the craftsmen involved, it remains there to this day!
Fast forward to 1983 and a big change in our Jaguars life, it leaves our shores bound for Turin, Italy where it spent many years on the enthusiast circuit. During its time Italy, it was awarded the numbered status of Historic Classic Car (HCC), confirming its originality, and it still proudly carries the club badges on its front badge bar today. The separate numbered HCC plaque also comes with the car.
Moving on to February 2016 and our XK finds itself back in the UK and in the custodianship of Mr Langstone Bolt who undertakes the Jaguars 2nd refurbishment. The car was dispatched to The Jaguar Workshop of Ealing for a full overhaul, this included a full service, new camshaft covers, rebuilt carburettors, new GAZ shock absorbers, new discs and uprated Fosseway Performance 4 pot front callipers, rebuilt steering, rebuilt suspension and new bushes throughout. The grand total for all the works was £10, 450.
After all the refurbishment work had been carried out, the Jaguar lived a very quite life, accumulating just 285 miles in the next 7 years, which brings us to the present day.
The Mechanicals
Considering this car has travelled less than 300 miles since having a full mechanical overhaul by a very reputable Jaguar restoration specialist, it should come as no surprise that the XK drives beautifully!
The engine starts very easily on the first try, idles correctly and pulls strongly through the rev range. The steering is surprisingly positive and the brakes are very strong, thanks, in part, to the Fosseway Performance brake upgrade.
The manual non synchro gearbox has a slick action and is a joy to use, it aslo has the optional overdrive, which works perfectly. All of which makes this XK150 extremely entertaining and engaging to drive.
The Exterior
Old English White is a classic choice of colour for the XK150 and the paintwork is in very presentable condition, it is not concours as there are a few minor blemishes around the car but for us, this is the perfect condition, it will still hold its head up high at your local classic car show but you wont be terrified to drive it.
The knock-off wire wheels are very attractive and have been powder coated in a bright silver, making them far more durable and easy to keep clean. They are wrapped in a matching set of period Michelin X tyres, all in excellent condition.
All of the trim and chrome work is present and correct, including one of our favourite parts, the boot lid badge commemorating Jaguars Le Mans wins in 1951, 53, 55, 56 and 57. All the brightwork is in very presentable condition, with just a light aged patina to it. The doors and boot lid catches and locks are all fully functional and even the wing vents open and close as they should.
The Interior
The cabin is in lovely condition throughout. The seats have been tastefully retrimmed in red leather and are just starting to develop that beautiful aged look. They also tilt correctly to allow access to the rear stowage area.
The headlining and carpets are clean and complete, and the dash and door cards have been retrimmed to a high standard. The brace of gauges showing fuel level, battery charge, water temp and oil pressure are all fully functional, as is the rev counter and speedo, though the needle does bounce a little bit below 30mph.
Everything is clean and tidy in the boot as well, with a good carpet, matching spare wire wheel and what looks to be the original mallet for the knock-off wheel spinners.
Paperwork
Our XK comes with a large file of paperwork, including, correct V5, Jaguar Heritage Certificate confirming its matching numbers status, receipts for its major overhaul in 2016 at the Jaguar Workshop, an original operating, maintenance and service handbook, a certified copy of the Devon archives showing the initial registration to Mr HC Sanderson, its Italian V5 equivalent, a lovely photograph of the XK in Italy wearing its Italian number plates and some period literature including an original Jaguar sales flyer and a beautifully preserved copy of Autocar from February 1958 with an XK150 SE test write up.
Conclusion
The appeal of this delightful Jaguar is clear to see. Mechanically robust, oozing stylish sophistication and very enjoyable to drive.
There is a sizable history file to back up the Jaguars credentials and it is clear that a huge amount of time, money and love has been invested to make it the car it is today, not a show field trailer queen but an eminently usable, fun and rewarding classic Jaguar.
