Seller's comments about 1963' Morris Mini
The Classic Car Company is delighted to present this fantastic Mk1 1963 Morris Mini Cooper, displaying in this beautiful shade of Almond Green/ Old English White with Dove Grey/ Porcelain Green vinyl. Designed by legend Sir Alec Issagones, the ‘Cooper’ was the performance variant, featuring a tuned engine with input from legendary F1 engineer John Cooper.
This particular car is fully restored. It received a full engine rebuild in 2024 with electronic ignition and a 1275 head, now producing 68 bhp! Following this mecahical overhaul, the body and underside benefitted from a glass out / bare metal respray. Weighing in around 600kg, there are a few ways you can put that power to better use!
Designed by Alec Issagones and his team, the car featured a transversely mounted engine to improve space inside the car, and used very clever design choices such as rubber cone suspension and smaller wheels to simplify the manufacture and keep it small and light.
The design had excellent handling characteristics, being very light and with a wheel at each corner, even F1 engineer John Cooper was impressed! With a very tuneable engine, the car was an excellent candidate for racing, and he approached BMC to make 1000 cars for homologation for Group 2 rally and racing regulations. The Mini Cooper was launched in 1961, and the car found instant success, winning the British Saloon Car Championship in 1961 and 1962 and in rallying, winning the Monte Carlo rally in 1964, 1965 and 1967, becoming an instant icon.
This stunning Mk1 1963 Morris Mini Cooper has been in our care for 3 years now. The car came to us with very little history, being a very original, but slightly shabby example, with a heritage certificate to show matching numbers. The car received a full restoration in 2023-24, and now presents almost as new, in this excellent shade of Almond Green with Old English White roof. The interior is fantastic, with the car featuring new vinyl seats in the original colour of Dove Grey/ Porcelain Green, with the dashboard having recently been replaced. The car is in great mechanical condition, having a full underside restoration, removing any corrosion and fixing any damage. The car has also had a full engine rebuild and work completed on the drive train, bearings, brakes and clutch. The car is now in excellent working condition!
Classic minis are famed for their drives, being a small size with a low centre of gravity and short wheelbase, giving a "planted" feel. The drive amongst many publications has often been called ‘go-kart-like’, for its agility, directness. Being only a few inches from the road at all times, the car makes 40 mph feel like 100 mph. With its small size on the road, any B road becomes a race track and any single country lane a rally stage! No wonder it was the car of choice for many future racing/ rally drivers at the time. The positioning of the pedals and wheel gives the car an excellent driving position, with pedals great for heel and toe. The disc brakes all round give great stopping performance, and the rubber cone suspension does an excellent job of dampening out the bumps of UK roads.
The car comes with a short list of paperwork as noted below, a heritage certificate, an invaluable Haynes manual and the original user manual that came with the car. The car also features a spare tyre.
